? Re how many oz to give 4 mo old due to sleep issues..

I should start off by saying DS is a big boy! He is the size my other was at 5 months when he was 2 months old. I work full time and only nurse in am, before bed and middle of the night. I pump twice at work. I sent three 4 oz bottles to daycare for him to eat every three hours during the day. I have no clue what he was getting from the boob in the beginning but he gained 3 oz in two weeks. The 4 oz seems to have been enough the past 5 weeks but the past two weeks he has been sleeping horrible. He went from sleeping a good 8-10 hour stretch and now getting up every hour if not every two hours. I can't figure out if he is hungry (I still nurse him back to sleep) and I need to up his bottle during the day? I never went up to 5 oz with my last child even when he was a year old. Is it possible since he is  bigger baby he needs more and  he isn't satisfied during the day hence the waking up all night long?

Thanks in advance for the help..I know each baby is different which is why this is so tough. I'm having a hard time since DH travels, I have a two year old and working full time on zero sleep. Blah..

I should add I asked daycare and he seems fine with the amount of milk he is getting, but he is a huge spitter-upper.

  • casey78 how long did your 4 month wakeful last for?

So he does eat a total of about I am guessing 24 oz. 12 oz at daycare and feeds 3 more times after that. I have his 4 month apt tomorrow so I guess I will see how his weight gain is going. He seems to be slimming down a little or just getting taller. I guess I should just suck it up during these long nights a little longer. Wasn't sure if I should try CIO or just keep feeding and putting back down. I would hate to start any bad habbits!

I don't know how big your baby is, but my baby is also very large--- she is currently 4 months and 2 days, and she is close to 18 lbs. By any standard, she is a HUGE baby too, probably like yours?

4 month is a wakeful period, and as my LC pointed out, "sure, you can stuff me at thanksgiving and I'll pass out.. but is that really a good solution long-term for sleep?"

If the daycare thinks he's OK, I wouldn't give more.

P.S. My first DD was similarly huge... wearing 9 mo clothing by the time she was 4 months old, and I still breastfed her exclusively until she weaned at 1 year. Your body will produce the milk you need if you let it!

  • Thanks everyone for the good advice. Last night was another night of up every hour. He is eating twice in the middle of the night still and the rest is just being put back to sleep. Yep he is a big boy close to 18 as well. I guess I will hope for each night to get better but until then I will just ride it out. I just makes me feel like im doing something wrong.
