Eptopic pregancy or too early to tell?

I went in for an early visit today. Just took a positive pregnancy test on Friday the 13th. I am having brown discharge and the usual "I'm pregnant" symptoms. Upon arrival to by appointment, i gave a sample and of course tested positive. However, the doctor could not find a Gestational Sac during the transvaginal ultra sound. Nor was he able to see anything on the rest of my reproductive system. I'm guessing I'm only three weeks along. I think its too early. My doc thinks; worst case scenario, that its an Ectopic pregnancy.I was given the  other scienero that I am too early in and we just cant "see" anything yet... I am having a more detailed ultra sound with radiology tomorrow to look into this further. I'm scared and dont know what to think. I'm not in any major pain, aside from slight cramps and nausea. I'm a tad scared.

Re: Eptopic pregancy or too early to tell?

  • My various doctors (I had 3 providers with my first due to moving) do NOT do anything more than blood/urine tests until 8-12 weeks for this reason.  It is highly possible it's just too early.  (There was an early ultrasound at 9.5 weeks because I asked when we'd be able to hear the heartbeat.)

Give it some time.  And, as my husband would say, breathe deep, seek peace.  I'm sorry you're going through this, whether anything is wrong or not.

  • I agree... They said they would do a pap but I was not expecting an ultra sound. I'm just floored. Hearing that type of news sucks...

Too early. I would not do a routine u/s before 8 weeks.

  • I'm going to agree that it's probably way too early. If they were able to see the sac, they'd be able to see if it was in the tube. I'm surprised that they'd have you come back for anything tomorrow, I'd think they would be better off maybe running a beta set and then having you come back in a week to see if they can see anything then. I'm surprised that a doctor would jump to ectopic before they'd say chemical pregnancy or miscarriage (not that I'm wishing any of that on you, OP, but it seems a weird thing to jump immediately to).

I recently had an u/s due to bleeding where they did not find anything in my uterus. They were also concerned with ectopic because my betas were over the widely used "discriminatory zone" for being able to see something. (1500-2000 mIu mine were over 3500). I was told that it's mainly a precautionary technicality that if no interuterine pregnancy is detected during an u/a it has to be presumed (or investigated) as ectopic until proven otherwise. I had an u/s a few days later due to heavier bleeding and a gestational sac and yolk sac were both found. It takes a while to be able to see what's going on in there, but the good news is, that once the ball gets rolling it grows rather quickly.... So, hopefully you can get a follow up in a week or 2 and see some progress. FX for you.

  • . Thank you all for your support and optimism! almost immediately after posting this My doctor  called me at workand confirmed I was pregnant and made an appointment for me with radiology for the following day, Which would have been the 20th. to have a more thorough ultrasound . As I was laying on the table a loud strong heart beat played through the machine and as I turned my head to look the tech moved the screen, She asked me to close my eyes and allowed me to listen and enjoy the only part of my baby I would ever have. Though she didn't verbally say it I knew.  I just knew it my gut what was going on. and It was confirmed as I witnessed her type on the screen. 5 Mins later I was whisked off to my doctors office and told my pregnancy was Ectopic. and I was Almost 10 weeks along by the look of things! I must have not been tracking right because I swear I had periods the past few months But never the less,  He showed me my baby. She looked so little. Like a doll. and she was stuck in a place she shouldn't be. Literal inches from where she actually should've been. an Interstitial pregnancy or (isthmic tubal pregnancy) as my chart said. I had to have emergency surgery because my doctor didn't know how I was not already bleeding or in pain. My tube was stretched to it limit.  ( I had no symptoms of a ectopic pregnancy. Aside from morning sickness I was pain free. Just plain tired all the time.) and They had to remove my right fallopian tube in the process. While my care was exceptional and I was allowed to morn and cry. I am still broken, We are still broken. My husband and I named our baby (at the guidance of the nurses who took care of me) : "Ellie Angel Anzaldua" Because Elephants never forget; and while I'm not an elephant, I am the mommy of an angel and that heart beat and silhouette are something I never want to erase from my memory.

  • THANK YOU. And your meme made me smile... Thanks for that...

  • If your 3 weeks pregnant no ultrasound is going to see anything definite including a sac
