3rd Trimester

Hospital bag.

For my hospital bag, I packed sweats, a few loose shirts, a maxi dress to go home with, breast pads & bras, insurance & ID, snacks for after wards, entertainment (magazines, iPod), and chargers, then my husbands clothes.

For baby, I still have to repack. I've packed and unpacked and repacked so many times. But basically, nail clippers, two onesies, a recieving blanket, socks & mittens, & the baby book for footprints.

What am I missing? What did you ladies pack that you did/ didn't use? Thanks in advance :)

Oh and I'm late but I'm due Tuesday! Baby is just stubborn and not showing any signs of coming -- no dilation, no effacing, hasn't dropped, only softened the cervix. So doctor is expecting her to be in there til 41 weeks, which is why I haven't stressed on getting this bag perfect....

Re: Hospital bag.

  • Oh, and I'm carrying my boppy and a comfier pillow and packed a towel in my bag too.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm so glad I packed a face cloth and a towel for showers.  The hospital stuff was scratchy and would have been uncomfortable to use.

Don't forget your cellphone/laptop charger if either of those things are coming with you to the hospital.

I also brought Livi's baby book so they would put her foot and hand prints in it for me after she was born.

If someone other than you is going to be calling friends/relatives to let them know baby has arrived, it might be a good idea to have a phone list so no one gets left out.

Shoes!  My feet swelled like marshmallows while I was in labor, until even my flip flops didn't fit.  I had to have my MIL bring me some that were two sizes larger!
  • Hair ties, Chapstick and some makeup and toiletries.

  • I also packed toiletries, robe, blanket (I was so cold last time), slippers, group b strep results (they made such a big deal last time since I didn't going a copy).
  • I've been told hand lotion. Since you'll be disinfecting your hands a lot, it will dry them out.
  • One thing to think about with a maxi dress for going home in is can you breast feed in it? (I'm assuming you plan to breastfeed since you mentioned breast pads). I totally didn't think about all the cute dresses I couldn't wear anymore because there was no way to breast feed in them last time around. Just something to think about, otherwise your list sounds great :-)

  • Go to my BMB June14 we had a huge post about this.  Really great suggestion there.

  • If you are Rh- and had to get a rhoGAM shot, stick the card they gave you with the date of the injection in your hospital bag. They'll want to know when you got it. :)

Bleeding after is heavy and I skipped using my clothing and towels to keep them nice.

Like some of the other PPs I just used the hospital gown, the way the sleeve unbuttons was perfect for trying to breastfeed. I also kept shaking and getting so sweaty after delivery!! It was nice just to sweat it out and then slip on a fresh, clean gown. I also took hard candy for labor.
  • I think you sound pretty good. The only things I used that weren't on your list are my flip flops and my toiletries. The hospital supplied shampoo and soap but I wanted my own shower gel, luffa and shampoo. It made me feel better to have the scented stuff that I really like. And of course my toothbrush and toothpaste. I can't do anything before brushing my teeth in the morning.
  • I would add nappy rash cream, socks, maternity pads, toiletries (including makeup!) and snacks. Also a little hat for baby too keep his/her head warm in the early days.
  • im puzzled bout what kind of breast feeding gown I need and a cheap one and its hard to find bras to what type of things you guys are packing and for how long

  • I found a nightgown at target, not specifically a "nursing" one but it is a v neck and very stretchy and black so it won't show dirt.  Their Gillian o-Malley products are super stretchy and soft, I can pop a boob in and out easy :)

  • Thank you so much for this list!  I unfortunately didn't have my bag ready and was admitted to the hospital on Friday (escorted from my appt.) and was totally unprepared.  I haven't had the baby yet, but they are not going to discharge me so I am having to rely on others to go to my house and round everything up for me.  Now I can give them my list (based off all of your great suggestions) and make it a little easier on everyone!
  • I wouldnt use baby nail clippers right away. Their nails at first are like skin. Use a file to shorten them. Specifically told to me by an ob nurse when i wanted to clip my dd's long nails
