Tips for a congested baby!

LO is very congested due to a throat infection and cold. He keeps waking up as his nose gets blocked and then cries hysterically for a really long time which makes it even worse. He is hungry but won't eat as I think it may be due to his blocked nose.

His pedi suggested using Vicks as he is almost 6 months. I put a little bit but he seems even more irritated by it. Right now I am trying to keep him upright and help his nose open up but any other tips to help decongest? It's too hot for a humidifier I think. Anything else I can do for him especially while he sleeps?

Re: Tips for a congested baby!

  • Cool mist humidifier, saline, nose frida, Vicks on feet. Hope lo feels better soon!

  • Saline and nosefrida were lifesavers when E had a cold. Other than that, keeping him on an incline as much as possible. If you can have him sleep on an incline, too, that should help him sleep better. I hope he gets better soon!
I second the saline and nosefrida! Hope he starts feeling better!

  • @Penguin173‌ the issue is the moment I attempt to saline and suction his nose he freaks out and cries even more. I'm kinda stuck on that :-(

@dunvilles‌ Vicks on feet? I've never tried that. I was too wary of applying on the chest as he is still under 6 months. Does Vicks on feet really help and how?
  • Thanks ladies. I think in being a wuss about the nose suction and worrying about the crying. I have him in his RNP for the moment so hopefully that helps. I will turn on the humidifier and apple some Vicks.

@KatyBriggs‌ K is a side sleeper and will sleep on his stomach from time to time so that's not the issue. My struggle was no matter how he is sleeping he keeps waking up every 5-10 mins due to his nose blocked and just starts to cry hysterically. I guess I just have to power through with him for a few days until this runs it course.

@Bookshelves‌ I did the hot shower thing this morning too but I think I should have shut the door to let the steam stick.
  • Only BABY Vicks, right? Adult Vicks can cause respiratory issues in babies.

We are dealing with this same thing right now. It sucks hard! I hope your baby feels better soon.

Wait- my pedi said regular Vicks was just fine?? Damn now I'm worried as I put some ( very little amount) on his nose.
  • Well, I hate to contradict your doctor because I am not a doctor myself but adult Vicks can cause problems for babies. They make a baby version that doesn't contain menthol which is the possibly problematic ingredient in adult Vicks.

Don't spend too much worry on it I think it's one of those things where nine out of ten babies are fine.

  • @Hg45‌ sorry! Just saw you asked me about Vicks on feet. I don't know the science behind it but my doctor suggested it with ds1 and it seemed to help a ton! We do Vicks on his chest and feet. Put socks on afterwards. :) we have baby Vicks but use adult Vicks now too. It was approved by my pedi. Hope lo is feeling better!
