Potty Training

Stool Withholding - Any Experience?

My twins have been trained for almost a year, since they were 2 1/2. My daughter easily got the peeing down, but has struggled with  pooping in the potty. She does not have accidents, but will wait until she is wearing a pull-up at nap or nighttime to have a bowel movement. Lately, her bowel movements have been much more infrequent - she is "afraid" to go in the potty and she no longer really wants to go in her pull-up.  Recently, she went more than a week without going...she had prunes, prune juice, and miralax daily (at the doctor's direction) and still held it in. She is not constipated, her stools are soft. Finally, we had to give her a suppository which worked. The doctor wants us to give her miralax daily and encourage her to go on the potty with a chart and small toys which we will keep in the bathroom as rewards.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or just any similar experience?

  • I don't have any suggestions (sorry!) but I wanted to tell you that you are not alone. DS1 who turned 4 in March refuses to even try to poop on the potty. He ONLY goes in a pull up at night in his sleep and no amount of bribery is going to change his mind on this. I swear DS2 is going to be pooping on the potty before he does!

  • Thanks for the response, izziebee. Sorry you are dealing with this too. So far, she has been going daily (either in the potty or in her pull-up) since we saw the pediatrician. I would prefer her not going in the pull-up (and I'd rather not be giving her miralax), but I'm just glad she's not holding everything in for 8+ days. And I'm really surprised she's been going in the potty at all.
