PR: Snacks at home

So today we had friends over for a playdate with Reese. Their DD is two years older then Reese. Anyway, we brought in lunch from Surf Taco. They were here from about 11-4pm. But mid-day, their daughter was actively looking for "snacks" to eat---and then we realize that we just don't have any at all. I mean, we have food--but just never "buy" snacks. When Reese wants a snack it is typically fruit, yogurt, carrot sticks or dry cereal. She isn't too big a fan of snack food, and I know if we have it DH and I just eat it all.

We finally sliced up a watermelon and the girls had watermelon, peaches and split a banana for a snack.

But do you have snack foods in your house? Even for other kids? (if you don't eat them). If other kids want a snack, what do you offer them?

Playdates are new for us. I feel like a novice.

  • We keep apple sauce and cereal. Sometimes I have puffs around if I see them on sale.

  • "Snack" food for us is oranges, bananas, yogurt, gold fish, animal crackers, cheese sticks.  That is what I buy on a regular basis.

In addition to the obvious fruit - bananas, strawberries, etc. IMO fruit is always appropriate for a snack. Throw in a string cheese for some protein & you're set.
Oh I agree. Fruit is our #1 go to in our house for a snack. Which is why we have it. But I could just tell that the other kid was looking for something that WASN'T fruit. She did eat fruit but it wasn't her first choice.

  • This is probably different for us since DD is FTT so whatever she wants she gets.

Fruit, hard boiled eggs, cheese sticks. I also keep cereal bars, either the full size ones or the toddler ones. Fruit snacks, crackers.
Reese actually needs to eat more--she isn't FTT but the doctors watch her weight VERY carefully, and if needed will place an NG tube. Right now, it hasn't been necessary. She just doesn't really like those food items, so just won't eat them. I guess I will try again and see if I could find individual packages of things for other kids (and maybe she will eat)

  • We usually have fruits and veggies for snacks. Every once in a while, they get graham crackers because they love them so much.

I keep some snack stuff on hand. Snacks normally consist of fresh fruit, cheerios, goldfish, craisins, pirate's booty, or nutrigrain bars.

Eta...we always have the applesauce and fruit/veg pouches on hand too bc my kid is obsessed with them!

  • I usually have Pirate Booty, Cheerios and animal crackers for snacks. Sometimes Cheez its or goldfish. For playdates, I usually cut up a bunch of fruit, throw in some cheese and crackers and call it good. Fruit is a great snack.

We're on the go a lot, so I keep things like string cheese, apple sauce pouches, boxed raisins, fruit leathers, goldfish crackers, granola bars, and yogurt tubes on hand. I also pack these things (as well as cut up fruit/veggies) for DS's school snacks during the school year.

For play dates, I usually bake a batch of muffins (always a hit) and serve fresh fruit.

  • They're lucky you provided any food or snack for the play date. They could have easily packed a snack. What you served was great.
Actually, we were lucky. They treated us to lunch, which was take out. By we I mean, DD, DH and I. Not just DD. They are friends of ours, so it just started to wonder what other people serve as snacks :)

  • Ah, thank you @PrivacyWanted‌. Off to Costco later. :)

  • our "snacks" are mostly yogurt, fruit, cheese (I buy blocks and cut it up), pretzels or goldfish.  We have other snacks like individually packed brownies and stuff locked up for DH's lunch but if I wouldn't give it to DS, I wouldn't offer it at a play date.  If you dont like my snacks, bring your own.  I think watermelon, peaches and banana was a great snack.

  • All we do is snack.  Mostly the same as what everyone mentioned.  We also have, chips and salsa, hummus and pita chips, triscuits, wheat thins, nuts, cheese, carrots, celery, tomatoes, fruit, yogurt tubes, peanut butter, granola bars, cereal bars, rice krispie treats, cookies, chocolate ...  Not proud of that it's just how I grew up.

  • P is super into crackers lately, so we eat a lot of Annie's snacks, the cheddar bunnies, squares, white bunnies, also Earth's Best crackers and their cereal bars. Usually it's the typical fruit and cheese though, or yogurt pouches or applesauce pouches. And graham crackers, the kid loves graham crackers!

  • I'd like to add Combos to the list. As a special treat he will sometimes get a small handfull of mini marshmallows.  Like 3 times a year though.
