Trouble TTC

something other than IVF for low AMH and high FSH?

Hi everyone!  My DH and I are TTC for >1 year now (me: 33, he: 34).  I recently learned that I have a low AMH (0.8) and high FSH (~14), and all my RE will recommend is IVF.  Has anyone had a similar diagnosis but tried hormone treatment, such as Clomid, with success?  I'm checking to see if my RE will budge on this, and if not, I'm considering a second opinion.  Thoughts?

  • Hi and welcome! I do not have much experience yet so I'm not sure about your situation specifically. Just wanted to say good luck and if you are unsure I would at least get a second opinion to help make you feel more confident in your decision. Good luck!

  • Hi! I had a similar situation, after chemo my AMH went to 0.77 and I had an FSH of 19. My RE wanted to try a cycle of IUI before we do IVF if necessary. I was on 150 IU of Gonal-F for 6 days and then triggered with Ovidrel yesterday. After 4 shots, my FSH went down to 9, so totally normal now! My RE isn't too concerned with my AMH because all of my other levels are good now. Good luck!
  • Wow, I'm so sorry for that really tough news your RE gave. I have no personal experience, but you'd think a good doctor would at least be willing to work with a patient to move at a pace that is comfortable for them. At the very least, an IUI cycle with injects would give invaluable information as to how your body responds to meds and allow for a much more effective IVF cycle.

*BFP warning* I was diagnosed with an AMH of .8 but my FSH was always less than 10 and I am 31 years old. My Doctor told me we would try 2 IUIs anf then try IVF because he felt I had about a 10% chance with IUI. I was put on injections and responded well to the meds. After 2 failed IUIs I pushed for another one and fell pregnant. I recommend you at least try IUI, you never know what might happen!
  • ** BFP warning** /  **Loss**

I am 31 years old and have an AMH of .46, FSH of 7. My doctor started with a medicated IUI cycle, but recommended injectables over clomid because with the injectables, you can change the dosage as needed, depending on how you are responding. I responded well, had multiple follicles and got pregnant the first cycle. Unforunately it was an ectopic pregnancy, so I had emergency surgery and I am now recovering. Based on my experiance,  I would recommend trying IUI first, if thats an option.

    ** Losses Mentioned **
    Me(32) - Low AMH (0.46) and DH(33) - All good!
May 2014 - IUI (Follistim) = BFP! Ectopic. Surgery June 2014.
    August/Sept 2014 - IVF #1. BFP! Chemical Pregnancy.
    November 2014 - IVF #2; ER only - PGS testing 3 Frosties.

Thanks all! I asked for a less involved treatment first and got it. I'll be starting 3 cycles of Clomid and IUI soon. I'll ask about injectables instead of Clomid. There are so many drugs that I have no idea what's best--that's what the docs are there for right? Fingers crossed!
