Financial People on the Board- Dinar Scam? My MIL is in to it

My MIL is uber-religious and is obsessed with those doomsday prophets and all of that creepy crap on late night TV. She has recently became involved in this whole Iraqi Dinar thing and she has already invested over 6k. I do not know much about it, but I am certain that it is false. She sends constant texts, emails, ect to DH and I as well as the rest of the family encouraging everyone to put money in. I feel badly for her and I have tried to tell her that she is making very risky investments, but she is sure that she's going to make millions. Does anyone know anything about this? Is it truly a scam? Is there any info that I could send her way before she puts more money in? FWIW- she is not a stupid woman. She has her PSY-D and is a clinical psychologist. It seems like she has just gotten sucked in or something.

I don't know if I'd call it a scam but it's a really bad investment.  It is no different than putting money into baseball cards or beanie babies thinking that there will be a demand later and they'll be worth millions.  Possible, but probably not going to happen.

Does she have enough money that it won't be a total waste for her to have the dinar?  My dad also believes the doomsday stuff and has invested into gold.  I think it is stupid and know that when we sell it after he's passed that we'll lose money but he isn't putting a large percentage of his retirement into it so I just let him do it and don't say much about it.

If shes investing only a small percentage of her nest egg into it then I'd just let it slide.  It's no different than spending 6k on something else that will lose value.

  • If you google Iraqi Dinar Scam several articles pop up. Here is one although you may not want to start with it as the title may be offensive to her. But I would pick 2 or 3 articles and send it to her as well as to other family members so that noone else is pressured by her to spend their money on it. You can word it nicely "I've done some research and we strongly feel that this is not a good investment opportunity. Just wanted to share some information..."

  • Thanks for the replies and the great article- I just read it and it summed it up perfectly. It's like buying tons of pennies and then keeping them stored for the day that they will be really valuable (probably never. or like pp said- it's like beanie babies or baseball cards) Scammers seem to prey on the elderly or the super religious- totally my MIL. On the flip side, she has the money to spend and it's her choice. It's just too bad because she is SO excited about her millions that she's about to make.
  • I have nothing to add, but was just laughing that after I clicked on this thread I got a "Safe Dinar" ad in the sidebar. It has a bump ad, it totally has to be legit!
