Ideas needed for own play group

Another Mom I know and I are going to start our own weekly play group for LO's as we are annoyed of the high fees we need to pay in our area for kids play rooms, My Gym/Gymboree like places. We both love sensory activities and want to incorporate some of these into our sessions. Once we have a few ideas sorted we will advertise these groups in our circle of Mom friends of similar aged kids, most of us met as part of a meetup group last year.

Now I need to find activities/themes to have in our sessions. Any ideas you can share with me to get the creative juices flowing? The other Mom and I have a meeting on Monday to get things rolling.

Are you on Pinterest? If so, follow "Growing a Jeweled Rose" - they have some great boards, all different seasons / holidays with kid's activities. They also have a board called the PLAY Group, which is where a bunch of bloggers pin their favorite kids activities.

Perhaps you can pick a theme for each month? Then let each hostess choose an activity to incorporate the theme. Some ideas: water play, sand, reading, puppets, holiday crafts, colors, shapes, music/rhythm.

I've got some more ideas, but J is being difficult. More later....

Other themes are taste/smell, outdoor nature objects (leaves, sticks, grass), cars/trucks-things that go!

The playgroup I'm part of is just play. I wish it was more. Your idea sounds amazing!

Stuff you guys might decide is how many kids is a good number? How you want to handle rsvps (our group has a secret FB group)? Does the hostess supply the snacks and activity?

M & I attend a weekly developmental play group. The themes have been:

seasons

colors (red/blue one week; yellow/green the next etc)

transportation

farm animals

etc

There are always several sensory "stations" each week - such as edible sand table, rice or beans bins, sometimes water play, colored play dough, different textures on the floor (eg artificial turf, bubble wrap etc), and art project/finger painting.

The class (75 mins) is structured the same way every week:

Free play 30 minutes

Art project 15 minutes

Circle time 15 minutes

Snack 15 minutes

I love our classes because I HATE cleaning up and I don't have the time or energy to make my own play dough or edible sand.

Great info, thanks. Now I am to research edible sand..... We too have done some sensory classes, live them. Only issue is their schedule and LO's nap schedule have not synced up for months

Our public library has a ton of stuff we can check out that would be great in this instance - like parachutes, kid instruments, bean bags, peg puzzles, puppets, etc. It could be a way to bring new "toys" in without breaking the budget. Good luck - this sounds like a great idea! Maybe I'll steal it next year and do it with my fellow teacher friends/kids over the summer!
