Stroller Questions for folks with more than 1

DD will almost be 4 when this bean arrives.  Do I even buy a double stroller?  My sister is about to have her second and is opting for the stroller with the standing board on the back.  So I guess I am wondering if I will even need a stroller for DD since she rarely uses one now.  What are other people doing?

  • I was thinking the standing board too, dd will be 3&1/2, and is already over sitting.

Does your dd do a good job of walking around? I know I'm having to figure out what to do. I would say if she is good st walking skip the stroller and reuse the one you have
She is a pretty good walker.  We just got back from a camping trip and she did really well on a 2 mile, hilly, hike.  But we then got back to the tent and she completely sacked out.  I have some time to think about it, but it does seem silly to buy a double stroller if she really won't use it much.  But then again, maybe there will be times I will need it?

  • I think I'll end up buying a used lightweight double stroller (like a Maclaren). DS will be a little over 2.5, so I don't think we'll use it all of the time, but it would be nice to have. Not something I want to spend a fortune on though.

  • We're sticking with the one stroller. DS will be 3.75 by the time this one is born, and he's been over the stroller for a while now. We do have an UBV and I will buy the standing board attachment just in case he thinks it's fun to hitch a ride.

I wouldn't bother getting a double stroller unless you go on outings a lot (amusement parks, mall, etc). If I was in your position I'd see how it works without it first, and if you think it's an issue, buy a used double stroller.

DD and this LO will be 21 months apart, 2u2, so I'm definitely buying one.

  • If your LO will be almost 4 I would skip the double. If you think she would need one if you are going somewhere with a lot of walking, you can usually rent double strollers (zoos, amusement parks, etc).

I have a couple of friends who invested in doubles for kids with a wider age gap and it didn't work out too well for them.

Thanks everyone.  I think I will opt not to get one and see where I am in a year.

  • I will wear ze bebe.
  • My DS will be 2.5 when this one is born. Double stroller for us! My DD at 4 rarely used a stroller.

I have a double because my first 2 are just over 2 years apart.  I have a 4.5 year old who still likes to ride in a stroller now.  If he were my only child though, I would not get a double.  He is perfectly fine walking and if it was a particular event where there would be a ton of walking and I think he would need to sit, I would get an umbrella stroller for him.  (We actually just went to Disney and brought 2 lightweight strollers rather than a double).

    I will wear ze bebe.
Do you have a carrier you like?  I had the Bjorn, ERGO, and Action Baby Carrier.  None of them were comfortable for me.  I have no torso and a large bosom.  Carrying baby never worked well.

  • I'll carry baby and my almost 4 year old (come next July) will walk or ride. We loved the Boba, ring slings, woven wraps and the Beco.
If for some reason baby doesn't want to be worn I'm going to get the double one that has the sit/stand/carsrat option

  • We will buy a sit and stand stroller. Leaning towards the Joovy VaryLight. I'll do a lot of baby wearing but want a place where I can contain both kids in a stroller if needed.

I'm grabbing a glider board for my double. Cady will be 3.5, Charlee will be 18 months. If I were to purchase something I'd get a joovy big caboose (if I find the the glider board isn't working out. Cady is a tornado).

So if I were you I'd get a sit n stand. I'd probably get one off craigslist to save -$$. I have a sit n stand for the girls now that I got for 20 bucks. I'd do the the Craigslist way especially of I was worried I wouldn't get use. 120 bucks is a lot of money for something you don't use. 20, not so much.

Have you tried Kinderpack or Tula? Are you willing to give wrapping a go? What about a mei tai?
I'm open to all of it.  Never tried wrapping.  I'm lucky to have a sister who handed me down all three carriers so I didn't have to go out and purchase each one.  Ergo was probably my favorite, but I couldn't use it past 6 months…baby got too heavy.

  • I'm struggling with this too.  DS will be almost 2.5 when LO is born.  I do plan to wear the baby a lot, but it's also nice to pop the infant carrier onto the stroller if s/he falls asleep in the car when out shopping or something.  I think if we do get one, we won't use it a ton.  So I'm not sure if it's worth it.

What part of the world are you in? Is it possible there is a local babywearing group or store where you can try some stuff? If not, there are rental programs out there...
I'm in New England…Boston area.  I am sure I can find something.

Most definitely. I have a friend in that area who babywears. She said the local babywearing group can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/BWIMV/ (I am not part of it. But if you wanted to get involved, that's the info I have.) There is also apparently a Boston specific group and a Central MA group, if the one I linked isn't quite the right part of town for you.
Thank you so much!  Above and beyond!

  • I'm wondering the same thing. Mine will be almost 4 but he is still a stroller kid, goes in it anytime we go to the mall or anything like that. I have a friend who still uses the sit & stand occasionally & her kids are 9 & 4!
  • Mine will be 2.5 when lo is born. My plan is to get a double Bob for walks. I have the single now and love it. But for errands etc I will wear the baby and stroller dd. I have a Maya wrap and ergo. I loved the Maya wrap for dd when she was an infant. I could get her in and out with her sleeping. It was amazing. Highly recommend. Because it's a ring sling it's fairly easy to use.
