Infertility

IVF Related Complications?

Okay, I had a major meltdown this morning.

I have two follicular cysts causing pain.  Saw RE yesterday who basically told me to come back in on CD 2 to evaluate and possibly start meds. This got me to thinking about what would happen if I started treatment and had a complication- i.e.: OHSS? and up in the hospital.

I called my insurance to find out if any hospital visits would be covered.  They told me that because that would be the result of a fertility (UNCOVERED) treatment that NO coverage would be available for treatment.  So basically if I ended up in the hospital because I overstimulated or had an issue we would be 100% out of pocket.

WTF?! WHAT?! I am a mess.  I know that it's negative to think there will be a problem but I am the girl whose mom got cancer the year her dad died.  Shit happens and bad luck seems to follow me.  Can anyone speak to complications they've had or issues they've had with insurance.

HOW CAN INSURANCE NOT COVER THAT? If I jumped in front of a car being an idiot that would be covered but not this?!  I am so angry/freaked out/upset.

Re: IVF Related Complications?

  • I have a similar situation (kinda). I have no insurance coverage for IF, but thankfully I have supplemental coverage through DH (also no treatment coverage, but they cover most of the meds thankfully!) and my hospital stay would be covered through him if there were complications. Because of my job, I had to get permission to be allowed to cycle, even though they're not paying for any of it. I was allowed ONE sick day for the day of ER, but if there were/are complications, then I could potentially be charged with a self-inflicted injury because it's an elective procedure. Fun times.

I despise insurance companies with a passion and fire that burns from within.

Wow. So it's considered a "self-inflicted injury" to have IVF.  OMG. Wow.  This is a new level of low to this entire experience.

  • Dude, you would not BELIEVE the conversations I've had with my doctor about this. He also feels it's ridiculous, but he doesn't have any control over it unfortunately. He's the one that was able to give me the sick day at least? He just didn't say what it was for.

  • I have not I intro'd here yet from 3t but will be soon as we are starting the IVF process in a month. I can't help but comment as this completely blows me away! My RE has already stated I would be on a low dose of Stims as I will be high risk for OHSS. That's terrifying enough. Now I am completely FREAKED out, as my insurance does not cover infertility. I never stopped to think about this. If this is the case for me, that we would not be covered for a hospitalization, this could potentially ruin everything we have been planning. FUIF

@AngM123 YES! See?  It's horrifying.  I didn't think about it either.  Now we are seriously considering using donor sperm and trying IUI.  And that is such a pathetic thought on the part of the insurance company.

  • Kinda off topic but I spoke with my administrator this week about possibly needing days off for ER and ET. He suggested I contact hr to inquire about Fmla. I did and it looks like I'll be covered for those days, as opposed to taking "sick" days and having them questioned. I have to have my RE fill out some paperwork and it has to be approved but it looks like I should be fine. There is a part of fmla that is intermittent absence and IVF would fall under that. Just a thought for others! :D

My request for coverage for ICSI was denied (it's covered if the man is the primary policy holder) because I could do IUI with donor sperm. They also cover IVF and meds if both your tubes are blocked. but because we're MFI and I'm the primary, nothing is covered. IUI with donor sperm *is* covered though.

Ready to take the road less traveled.
  • That link is terrifying. A WEEK in the hospital???! I wouldn't even want to imagine what that bill would be. Ugh. I also looked into FMLA at work, they didn't sound very promising about granting intermittent as it's "not a chronic medical condition." I feel like everything about this process is against me....
