Newborn shoes: are you bothering? What kind?

I'm trying to figure out whether or not to buy newborn shoes. What is everyone doing for the first couple of months?

Re: Newborn shoes: are you bothering? What kind?

  • I didn't really use shoes with DD while a newborn. Socks are much easier.

  • Yeah, thats what I'm thinking. I'm thinking she'll be in footed sleepers most of the time and maybe I can just get some warm booties for outfits if/when we taker out in Oct. -Dec. I know I really like the Robeez (sp?) slipper type shoes for my dd when she was a baby but she was probably at least 6-8 months old when I got them, I think? Thanks for the input!

  • I do use newborn shoes with cooler weather babies.  Socks never wanted to stay on, and the (completely soft, no hard soles) shoes kept the bastards on.  If the socks would behave, I wouldn't have bothered.

  • All the baby/infant shoes we had remained tagged in the closet through both Sophie and Gabby. So noo i won't be buying any.

This.  Just socks until then.  And even then, unless we were out somewhere, DD was usually barefoot when she was learning to walk.

  • I found a pair that have santa on them, for ONE DOLLAR. I bought those. They will probably not fit.

I was given some, but I can't remember the name of the shoe. Here's a picture of the present I got that day from an aunt, the shoes are in there, Robeez? Or something? I don't know. She says they are supposed to be the best kind, but I feel like shoes for a kid that doesn't walk is kinda dumb?

  • Same as everyone else, socks were plenty.  Shoes are (IMO) a waste of time/money!

  • Mainly socks. I think the socks that look like little shoes are adorable too. That being said we will have a couple pairs of cute little "dress up" shoes but I doubt baby will wear them much. My son didn't really wear shoes till he was starting to walm except for a couple special shoes he had.

  • I bought a pair for DS2 because they looked like baseballs and were $1.  I didn't get DS1 any shoes until he was walking.
  • I'm not planning on buying shoes until they start walking around. Even socks don't really want to stay on their floppy feet. I can see why people in really cold climates would purchase some sort of booties.

  • All my friends with kids said shoes and socks are pointless for the first 6 months-ish, and that the baby just wants to be in a footed onesie if its cold enough.

  • I'm just doing socks and maybe some cute booties.

  • D has big feet, always has. All of the shoes we got as gifts never fit right so we just stopped trying to use them.  When we finally measured him for shoes when he started walking they told he had already outgrown the "beginning walker" shoe size at Stride Rite.  Even now he is extra wide foot so its tricky to get shoes that fit.

  • I have some robeez.  My kids so far were able to get all brands of socks that I tried off in only a few minutes even as newborns.

  • I agree with PPs that shoes are pointless on babies who can't walk, but I have found a couple of pair that I couldn't resist!

I bought a pair of newborn booties because they were on clearance at Kohl's for $2. I just couldn't resist and since we get lots of snow where I live, I figured I'd give them a shot. Otherwise I wouldn't  have bothered. DS wore no shoes until he was almost ready to walk. If you do get any shoes before they are walking well, try making them soft soled shoes as they are most comfortable and can help them in learning to walk. Hard soled shoes are not needed until they are walking well and are walking outside.

The physical therapist in me cannot do it. No shoes til walking is what im doing!
  • I bought one pair of shoes...boots which are leather and furry in the inside.

The reason why....I live in Chicago, and when LO is born it is bound to be cold. So why did I buy boots? On the off chance that baby girl is in an outfit without feet built in and we need to to out for a bit. These will keep her socks on and her feet warm.

  • I've just bought socks...my mom has been buying "crib shoes." Something from back in the day she put on my brother and I. I think it's silly, but I'll let her spend her money, sure. LOL

  • Nope, just socks. We bought a couple pairs for pictures but other than that she did not wear shoes until she started walking.

  • We didn't use shoes until ready to walk but old navy sells these Velcro slipper booties that we used through the winter and they were awesome. I hope to find some this time around.
  • DD had shoes before she was walking but she didnt really wear them because her feet were so chubby. They still are (thank god for shoes with velcro).

We'll probably have this LO in sleepers most of the time anyway so no need. However, my gramma bought him the cutest pair of little felt booties that he'll wear if he needs to have an extra layer on his feet.

  • We bought so many pair of cute little crib shoes for our son and he never wore them. They were so hard to get on his tiny little feet and he'd somehow have them off within minutes. He didn't wear actual shoes until he started walking. Even then, he only wore them when we left the house.
  • I found a bunch of little shoes for 80% off at the clearance blast at BRU! They were $1-2 each. With DS I only used them for pictures or holidays. Booties work best- they usually all fall off anyway so don't go crazy or spend a lot!

    Those adorable shoe socks!!
  • Don't waste your money!!
  • Robeez no kick sock are the best thing EVER. Those things stay on through a one year old nap. But to answer your questions no shoes before walking here.

  • My sil is a shoe nut and she has bought some shoes for our little one but I don't think I would buy any. Most of the clothes we have so far are footed and they make cute little socks so we will probably go that way most of the time.
  • I am going to have the uo. I only use footed outfits at home and put my kids in onesies and pants or shorts when we go out. I put them in socks and depending on the outfit I put them in matching shoes. Once they are mobile they don't wear shoes other than when we are out. I have a whole storage tub of shoes for newborn to 18mos. They aren't necessary but a cute accessory. My kids also have sunglasses for every age. Lol. My ds left the hospital in shoes and sunglasses.
  • No shoes. My son didn't wear them until he was walking and then only outside of the house. I do want these booties for the winter for baby #2 though. It took a while to find the right socks that would actually stay on.

  • I'm due in October, I plan on just doing knitted boots, and I have gotten some fuzzy boots and socks. Just things to keep her little feet warm and to add to her stylishness <3 I can't wait !!
  • I was searching on Youtube and found this instructional video (iknits) that shows how to knit little baby 'Uggs' (sp?) booties. so cute! I have not successfully knitted anything yet but did buy needles and yard so I may give it a shot. Should be interesting.
