Potty Training-Should I start?

So I am completely cluless on this whole potty training stuff. Its like a whole other language to me. I have no idea when you start or how you start. The only reason I even bring it up now is because DS has been showing signs I guess you could say. When I say I have to go potty, he runs into the bathroom with me, pulls out his little potty and sits on it. Even if he is clothed. He likes the whole potty idea but obviously has no idea what you do with it.But last night, and this is the 3rd time its happened, after he poos he will run over to me, say poop and he grabs my hand and drags me into his room and gets a diaper for me to change him. Its like he does not want to sit in it, which is a good thing. So...do I go anywhere with this or just let it be for now?

Re: Potty Training-Should I start?

  • I am as clueless as you but it sounds like your LO might be ready to start.  I just bought DD her first potty book but haven't gotten out her potty yet.  She also hasn't shown the signs your LO has of running to get a diaper to be changed.  I'm not going to really start thinking about it until 18 months unless all of a sudden she decides she wants to use the potty.

The biggest advice I've heard is to not force it and to take cues from your LO.  Also, if you do get out of diapers during the day a lot of people recommend not using diapers at night too so as not to confuse LO.

I would go with it if you want...casually or not so causally depending on what you want to do.  Take his diaper off when he goes to the potty with you so that he has the chance to pee in the potty, offer him the potty first thing in the morning and before bed-  if you want to go the casual route.
If you want to commit, do a naked day or two and then get rid of diapers.  Constant reminders that pee goes in the potty.  20-30 months is considered the ideal window by some.

This. If he loses interest then I would stop & try again later.
