If your son is ready to start reading and is interested in trains, etc., why not just buy him BOOKS? I'm a strong believer that actual books trump electronic devices, even if the intent is education.
I have tried to get him into reading books, but all my friends also let their children play on phones and he seems to have gotten hooked on playing with my phone. I thought if he likes the phone so much; why not let him actually learn something while playing with it.
Hm. I actually like this app. And @welly336 we do tons of books for example, in two languages by the way. But we'll be traveling all next week, including 5 hours in the car and I downloaded a number of apps on my tablet and phone for the boys to be occupied. And as they are obsessed with something like this I will add that. To the OP - if you question is how much I would pay for this. If this is well designed and bug-free I would consider up to $2 depending on the extent of content.

And I'm not against phone apps but they should NEVER replace books.
