Pregnancy perks?

Hey all! I'm 40 and starting over. My kids are 17 and 14.

My question is when should you start using special privileges? For example, my employer has parking for expectant mothers. Technically, I am an expectant mother, but I'm only 6 weeks. What do you feel is an appropriate time to begin using these parking spaces? Or any other perks expectant moms might get? :-/

Re: Pregnancy perks?

  • The only perk we have for mothers are a few secluded breast feeding rooms, with a couch and mini fridge. I'm thinking about going in there when I don't feel good to hide. Wish we had special parking!

  • As PP said, I'd probably wait until you really need it, I'd say 3rd trimester at least. But once you're showing, why not use the parking space? That's what it's there for, anyway, right?

  • I wouldn't start using any of them yet... What if you park there at 6 weeks and make a mama who is 38 weeks walk all the way from the back? Unless you need them, don't use them.

  • I wish my work provided parking, period. I work downtown so I have to find a place to park myself. The only free parking is a few blocks away, which is ok now, but not sure how I'll feel about it if walking becomes difficult towards the end of the pregnancy. I do have the option to work at home, so I might look into that if it becomes an issue.

  • My job doesn't provide any perks, but working retail (and all my other department supervisors are guys) they won't let me lift anything. It's funny, but occasionally I'm like, really?? :) I know they are just trying to keep baby safe.
  • I am super jealous of all these perks!

Um no. That is for breast pumping mommas, to have a sanctuary, not a place to nap.
Who mentioned a nap? Only to hide out when I feel like shit. Only other place to do that is in my car, which is an uncomfortable 120+ degrees sitting in the sun. If there were any mothers in there, or any came in, I would let them know why I was there and give them the room.

I are a chicken pot pie that serves 3 with little guilt. I mean I do feed three: me, my nursling, and the nugget... Kind of.

    SURPRISE! Here comes #3!
  • Thanks for the input! That's pretty much how I felt - wait until I need it. Today I realized that we must have a maternity parking tag displayed from the rearview mirror to use them. Our employer gives them to us. I'm going to inquire about them but won't get one just yet. Congrats to all expecting!

  • I have to admit.. We went to Babies R Us the other night to buy a toddler bed for my SO's 2yo and I couldn't resist parking in the "Expectant Mother's" parking spot.. it was just too easy. He gave me a look like seriously? And I just smiled! :)
  • I wish my job had any kind of appropriate space for pumping. I had to use an extra office and tape up paper over the windows every time I had to go in there and sometimes it was being used for meetings a crap. I might just quit (very part time) to avoid that stupid room this time around

I had to do that with my last pregnancy. It sucked so bad. And the room was on the other end of the college campus I work on which took five min just to walk there. I'd tell my boss I'm going on break and he'd tell's ok see you in fifteen min. Um....I'm not pumping for five min when it takes ten to walk there and back.

  • I'm lucky that my office has lactation rooms complete with fancy pumps in them so you just have to bring some of your own stuff. (I'm not exactly sure what, I've never pumped or been in one, but the mothers here rave about them!)

We don't have special parking places unless you get a handicap tag. Watching my 36 weeks pregnant coworker waddle around uncomfortably, I don't think I would be using them anytime soon if we did!

Legally, there is no way to enforce those expectant mother spots. It's a courtesy offered by the store, but it's not legally enforceable the way handicap parking is. Yes, I've parked in them when KU and try to avoid them when not. But that's out of courtesy for others who might need them. If there were no other spots, I'd park there regardless of if I was KU or not.
Fair enough. It was exciting to me to "be able" to park in that spot because I am, in fact, pregnant! I never parked in them before this. I am always courteous and I really hate to see people abusing perks like that, unless there are no other options.
