Like pp said, bumpers are typically a big no no. I swore I would never use them. I ended up using them with dd when she was a little over a year old after she woke up screaming because she got her legs stuck in the bars. That being said, with this LO I won't use them and if the same situation arises, I would probably go for the breathable bumpers.
When DS was really small we didn't have any bumper in his crib but when he started rolling around and putting his limbs through the slats we put a breathable mess bumper in.

We started out with a mesh bumper but after changing the sheets three times in 16 hours, we got rid of it. More of a hassle than anything when changing sheets at 3 am. But we kept it just in case our ds or the new baby have issues with getting limbs stuck.
I'm in the no bumper camp personally, though particularly the padded ones. I think they're ADORABLE and I wish they weren't so unsafe, but they are and the fact that they're illegal in some states is enough to deter me from every getting one.
DD has gotten her leg stuck a couple times and it's not been a huge deal. If she were to start getting stuck more often, I'd probably get a mesh bumper.

We bought a breathable bumper with the intention of using it once he started moving around. However he only got his leg caught in the slats twice, so we didn't bother putting it in until after he was one and that was to keep his pacifier from falling through the slats at night.
I would never, ever use a padded bumper. I guess maybe they're cute, but not a risk I'm willing to take.
I had a beautiful padded bumper in DDs crib and she puked all over it. I think it was spaghetti of some sort because it was red. Puke is impossible to get out btw. Stick to mesh. We're doing mesh this time around.

I'll put in a breathable bumper once the baby is old enough to roll around, if I find they are getting their limbs stuck or something. It will come down once they are pulling up. If they aren't getting limbs stuck or anything, I will pass.

I voted other bc like many pp have said I don't plan to use them unless an issue arises after 6+months. Not before then and will start with the mesh ones.
No bumpers at first, but as baby gets older if they start to flail around a lot I may add one. It looks like the nursery set we may register for has one included.
**Side note/threadjack - anyone have any good ideas of what else I could use the bumper for? decor ideas? Other upcycling ideas?
I had a thick pillow-style bumper which was super cute, but super scary. I took it off at about 3 1/2 months when my DS started to roll over. I then used a breathable bumper. At 10 months he was crawling and cruising very well and pulling up so I put the thick bumper back on. This system worked well. I am not sure what I am going to do this time around. I also used sleep sacks which are AWESOME! This prevents legs from getting stuck. The safest way is no bumper and sleep sack.
We are going from cosleeping to a flat bed and skipping the crib (just works for our living situation) so luckily bumpers vs. stuck limbs won't be a problem.

DD didn't start really sleeping in her crib regularly until she over 6 months and she always got her legs stuck so we put them in and we had no issues. I don't know what will do with baby boy yet, play it by ear I guess.
People keep saying bumper are a terrible thing because baby could die of SIDS and loss of oxygen. Honestly my newborn is going to be at my bedside for the first few months and we plan to only use the crib for naps until baby is able to sleep through the night. I believe bumper are safe if used properly.
We didn't use them for DD and wont for this LO. I always check on DD before going to bed and she often is sleeping with her legs or an arm thru the slats but has never has a prob getting stuck or hurt.
Glad I opened this thread! I had not done any research on this topic and really hadn't given it much thought... now I know, bumpers are a no go! Thanks ladies!
At first, I used no bumpers. Then as my DD got older, her legs were getting stuck in between the crib bars. I used the mesh bumpers, but they sucked. When she was around 6 months, I used the padded bumpers in her crib and have no issues.
I voted no bumper. I will have one while baby is not in the crib the first few months. Once baby is in the crib, I'll take it out. I bought a mesh one for when E was in the crib and absolutely hated it.

No bumpers. Our son has woken up a maybe 2 or 3 times with a limb in a the crib slate.
BUT...
I'd rather be woken up everyday to a screaming child with a limb stuck then a child not waking up because I put them at risk for SIDS.
