Trying to Get Pregnant

Which temp to use?

Ok. This is my first full month temping and I'm not sure what to do.

So I woke up at my normal temping time (5:30a) and realized that I was mouth breathing last night. (I've for some serious nasal congestion going on due to allergies.) I temped and got 97.34 which is my lowest temp to date.

I went back to sleep and woke 2 hours later (at 7:15a) hoping my mouth was shut but no- my mouth was still open. I temp anyway and get 97.83 which if I chart this it would indicate a huge spike, and along with watery CM yesterday and today might screw FF up to think I'm Oing today at CD9. (OPK was neg.)

Chart is in siggy. (Sorry I can't link for mobile as I'm on mobile right now, too.)

Re: Which temp to use?

  • Use the first one.

As tempted as you might be, try not to temp twice.  It just leads to confusion.  Time of temping matters a lot for me, and if I temped after going back to sleep for a few more hours, my temp would be way higher the second time around.

  • Personally I'd go with the first one, since it's recommended to have at least 3 hours of sleep before you temp. I could be wrong, though.

Also, have you considered switching to temp vaginally? It could be more accurate if you commonly breath from your mouth while you sleep. Edit: you'd need to start at the beginning of a cycle though. Vaginal temps are higher than oral.

  • I don't typically breathe from my mouth. As I said in my OP, it was an off breathing night as I'm severely congested.

  • I'd also use the first one if I were you - I wake numerous times at night and as long as I get 3 hours of sleep before temping I use that temp regardless of what time it is.  I can still see the rise in my temp to confirm O, so it's never been an issue.

The important part is getting 3 hours of sleep first.  Good luck!

  • Another vote for the first one.

  • Thanks all! I was pretty sure I needed to use Temp #1, and I even doubted myself once I started Temp #2. I'm pretty positive the mouth breathing was due to my severe nasal congestion that creeped in this weekend, but I've been keeping a watch on it in case it continues!

This just happened to me today! I woke up at 530a to use the bathroom and took my temp (97.33) then went back to sleep (on and off) until 845a (97.71) . I initially used the second temp but SO glad op asked and all you pps had advice! Thanks!
