Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

What age did you potty train?

*Cross posting in Potty Training*
My 20 month olds daycare sent home a letter asking us to let them know if we want them to start potty training.
We didn't potty train DS1 until he just turned 3 - we delayed it a bit b/c we were moving from NY to FL, plus, the baby was just born and that was about all I could handle with my husband traveling every week.

Anyways, at what age did you start potty training?  Did you have success at 20 months? I'd LOVE to get him out of diapers and don't want to miss a good window of opportunity like I think we did with my DS1 (he still won't poop on the potty, only in a diaper at night).
Just looking for opinions on starting at this age.

Thanks!

Re: What age did you potty train?

  • My DS is 23 months.  I know his DC will want to start potty training soon.  DS is waking up dry after sleeping 12 hrs at night pretty often so I've been pushing it just a little bit more. We have a seat reducer and a little potty.  If he doesn't want to get on the potty I don't make him.  But I've been trying to put him on after breakfast and before/after bathtime.  He has pooped on the potty the past two mornings after breakfast.

Honestly, if it were up to me I'd probably wait until he was 100% ready and I knew it would be met with little resistance. But since that won't fly at DC (he can't move to the next room until he's PT'd) then I'm trying to get him prepped.

  • Heh, DS1 not until 3.5.  But he is on spectrum and we waited for him to be well-established in his ABA program and feeding program.  It wasn't a high priority for me.  DS2 is 23 months and in day care so of course they want him trained.  He doesn't like to sit on the potty.... He will ask to do it sometimes but then wants to stay there for all of 5 seconds.  He asks for bubbles (DS1 gets rewarded with bubbles for going) and I tell him he can have bubbles if he pees or poos in the potty.  I tried naked time but he doesn't like it.  I'm just not pushing it right now.  DS2 never wakes up dry (he's a heavy night pee-er).  I wonder if he would do better with a mini-potty but I'm afraid to get one out because I don't want to confuse DS1.

This sounds like my DS2, he asks to sit on the potty b/c he sees his older brother but he doesn't stay there. He does tell me that he pooped - sometimes, but not all that often. Plus, he wakes up most mornings very wet but that's also I'm sure b/c I give him milk still before bed. I need to start cutting that out... ;) I think I'm just so anxious to get him out of diapers that this is so enticing but deep down, I don't think we're ready.

  • I had a dream that DS2 would PT during/following DS1, especially since they said he went in the potty a few times at day care.  But I don't think he's ready yet.  And I do NOT want to push before he's ready and create a negative association, making the situation worse.  DS2 gets a fair amount to drink after he gets home and before bed (6-7:30 PM).  I had been trying to reduce liquids before, but when he moved to the next room at day care they wanted them to start using their cups (which are tiny) vs his own straw cup from home.  I think since the cups are so small he gets less to drink.

  • DS1 was a little over 3 when it clicked and he potty trained like a dream child.  We tried a few times before then but he was obviously not ready so we backed off so as not to turn it into a battle.  We're not going to push it with DS2 until he seems to be 100% ready.  He's not in daycare so there is no outside force encouraging it when he's not ready.
  • 2 1/2, it worked really well for DD.  Very few accidents, she was highly motivated and excited about the whole process.
  • We started the "Potty without pressure" method or something like that when LO was 18 months-- so we introduced her to the potty and let her practice sitting on it and using it, but only if she wants to.  And she stays in diapers the rest of the time.  It is working well so far-- she goes on it about once or twice a day, which is pretty good I think since it isn't getting reinforced at her daycare. I think she'd be receptive to stepping it up a notch and doing naked time or the timed sits over the weekend, but we haven't taken the time to try it yet.

We started to sit our 16month old on the potty and read her 3-4 books after supper.  She is in diapers (cloth) and will be for some time coming but we will slowly start popping her on the potty a few times a day.  While reading a few books she will naturally at some point pee/poop and we'll say 'yay' and eventually she'll connect the dots and try to pee/poop and over time we'll have her sit on it more often.

No interest in having her out of diapers until she is fully trained.  Will just aim to have the diapers stay dry longer and longer until they are not needed.

I have trained many toddlers with this method (at work) and it seems to work best.

  • I started when they started telling me when they had to go. DD1 was almost 2.5 years. DD2 had just turned 2. I had a much much easier time with DD1, so I hope DD3 waits until closer to 2.5-3 years.

  • 21 months. I had just had DD#2 and DD#1 was handing me diapers to change her after she went to the bathroom. I used the 3 day potty training method and had great success.

  • Right before 3. We introduced her to the concept of potty around 2 or 2 1/2, but she didn't get it (or care) until much later.

  • I'm sure daycares have policies on this, but speaking from experience, potty training too early is painful for all involved. It's much easier to change a diaper than clean human waste from carpets, couches, carseats, etc.  If LO is ready, he'll pick it up fairly quickly. If he has accidents all the time, he's not ready.  DD was 2 1/2 when we started, and within 2-3 weeks was wearing underwear consistently without accidents.  DS is 20 months and I won't even consider potty training until at least 2 1/2. Maybe closer to 3.
  • I start at 18 months.
My 23 month old as of two weeks ago is completely potty trained.  She was wearing diapers to bed at night, but has been waking up dry, so we stopped completely.
  • We PT DD at 24 months. She was ready from 22months I'd say but we had a brand new baby then so waited a few months for that dust to settle. Did the 3 day method and it was fantastic, only had 3 accidents in total after the first weekend was over.
