Baby Shoes

Where do you get your baby shoes at? DS is really starting to want to be on his feet more and more, so I need to get him some shoes. I'm having trouble finding shoes with actual soles on the bottom (I don't want crib shoes) in his size. His size 3's fit now, but I want to get 4's so that he can wear them into the fall. Is a Toddler 4 the same size? Children's Place lists them that way. Any tips would be great! :)

Re: Baby Shoes

  • I'm glad you asked this. I was just looking around and I know this topic has come up several times so I was hesitant to ask.  I have found shoes for dd in payless, burlington and children's place.  However, now that she is standing and trying to walk I don't know if I should be getting something that's a better quality or if there is anything in particular I should be looking for so that she has some sort of support.  If anyone has any advice on this or where to get them I'd much appreciate it.

  • I wait until he is walking well and get soft soled shoes.  Once the walking gets better then i will get harder soled shoes.  I usually get DS1's shoes at Stride Rite so I can get him measured so I know the shoes are a good fit.  This helps too because he has wide feet so I can't just pick a random pair in his size.

So do you suggest not getting a soled shoe until he is really walking well on his own? I feel like he's going to tear apart the bottom of crib shoes.

They make soft rubber soled shoes.  I can't remember the brand we had but I saw them at BRU a couple weeks ago.  I'll see if I can find them.  Give me a minute to search and find a link.

Here's the link to the ones I had for DS1.  He didn't wear them until he was a year old and walking.

  • Soft sole or bare foot is best until they start walking and need more protection. Then you want something flexible. I like stride rite because they measure they feet and have shoes designed for early walkers (flexible sole). I would not buy big. New walkers need a secure fit and you don't want it irritating them. Good baby shoes can be pricey, but it's worth it.

  • My pedi told me if you do buy shoes they should be very easy to bend. I just picked up a pair two weeks ago at Old Navy and they are very soft and "bendy." Oh and cute, I forgot cute!
  • We go to a local "mom & pop" shop called Gierks. Joey is in a size 6!! His feet are wide & huge!! Once he starts walking, I will probably go to Kohls or something along those lines. He likes to be barefoot though most of the time.

  • @snowboarderbritt - I LOVE those moccasins, I've been eyeing them for months but I know DH wouldn't be too happy if I spent that much on shoes for DS. I rarely spend that much on my own shoes.

I'll plan on keeping him in gripper socks for now. He is barefoot most of the time but he is really starting to want to get down and be on the ground. I'm going to look into the real bendy shoes too for the times we're outside. I'd hate for his little feet to get torn up.

  • I agree with pp about soft soled or barefoot as long as you can. Also, I would not buy big. I not comfortable in shoes that are a size too big, I can't imagine a brand new walker would be either. It can get expensive but good well fitting shoes are very important for gait and balance.

  • I agree barefoot is best at home, but we use shoes when we go out, especially since he walks pretty much all the time now. DS did fine with the harder soled shoes I got him at Payless yesterday, but most of ours have been like the ones from Babies R Us above. I don't think they need to be super high quality bc the babies grow out of them before they wear them out.

  • I have had a lot of people recommend the freshly picked moccasins to me. Like sooner said, barefoot is best, but these provide a little protection from the elements while being almost like barefoot for walking.

    Here is the link: https://freshlypicked.com

They come in super cute colors and patterns.

those are cute but OMG THEY'RE $60!!!

This was my exact reaction!!! They are super cute though!!

I know! I found a pattern to make them though! I have to keep my eye out for a good deal on leather. Pretty sure my husband would shun me if I spent that much on shoes for her when she will grow out of them so fast! But I have so many friends who have them and swear by them! ETA they do giveaways on their Facebook a lot, so I have been entering all of them. Haha. Plus at a local boutique they had copy cat ones.

Wait, what?  Teach me your ways.  I'm tired of carrying this kid.

Clara doesn't wear shoes or socks because she only crawls.  Besides getting dirty, not much happens to her feet.

Size 6? Are you sure? My two-and-a-half-year-old wears a size 7.
  • Walking barefoot or as close to it as possible is supposed to be good for children's foot development, so we don't usually buy baby shoes until they are ready to start walking outside and need foot protection. Until then, we just do barefoot or gripper socks full time.

Ok good. LO currently has zero pairs of shoes.

Same here. LO has never worn a shoe or slipper.

They are different.  There is one set of sizes for infants. Then you move into toddlers/preschool shoes and sized. When the toddler/preschool hits a certain size it switches over to kids, then to adults.  I forget exactly what the sizes are though that these switches happen.  Its been a few years since I worked in footwear (manufacturing not retail).

I absolutely love them and wish I had every color. We waited in line at her warehouse (the girl is from Utah) for over an hour to get a pair for 50% off. I spent $30 on baby shoes and I was like this is the best!!!! Until later that night I was like.. Dang. That's still a lot of money for baby shoes.

But honestly I love them. They stay on his feet and they are pretty stretchy. We get compliments on them everywhere we go.

My kiddos go barefoot at home and out and about when standing but not yet walking on their own we get Robeez or something similar. When they start walking we start out with Stride Rite SRT Soft Motion or some other flexible rubber soled shoes.
