My baby was born in the summer, so I didn't really use receiving blankets. I like the Aden and Anais muslin blankets instead, much lighter and more versatile. Another waste was cute outfits for newborns. Except for newborn photos, newborns spit up, poop and get changed so often, and it was hot outside anyway, so I just stuck to onesies until baby was a little older. Plus, having to change a newborn (mine was tiny at 5 1/2 lbs) into complicated outfits and lots of accessories was tough, and my baby didn't seem to like it. Another waste was wubbanubs; they were cute, but were too heavy and fell out of baby's mouth too often. Basic soothies are the best. Newborn toys like border patterns for the crib and car were useless, I don't know if my baby even spent much time looking at them, and a baby's vision gets much better very quickly that I think that the designs didn't do much.
I also had a summer baby. The most wasteful thing for me was sleepers--we swaddled baby to sleep, and he would have been much too hot wearing a sleeper or "gown" AND being swaddled. He pretty much wore only onesies for at least 4 months--until it became cold enough that he needed pants.
Luckily virtually all of the sleepers and gowns I had were ones I had bought at a consignment shop for $1-2 apiece, so it wasn't much of a waste.
Other things that I know a lot of people needlessly spend big bucks on:
1. Nursery decor
2. Shoes for babies who are nowhere near able to walk
3. Receiving blankets
Sorry, these are all baby items, not "pregnancy items"...I didn't buy much pregnancy gear so I don't remember having anything useless. I do think some people go overboard on the maternity clothes--just get some belly bands to extend the life of your "normal" pants, and get a few good pairs of maternity jeans/pants.
bjorn baby carrier. never used it. i know there are lots of mom's that use slings and carriers, but we haven't with either kid and have survived no problem.
never had a swing for DS, but DD love hers. never had a formal changing table (other than the attachment on the PNP bassinet) for DS, but have one for DD and love it (but cannot say I can't live w/o it, as I surely can, as demonstrate w/DS).

Newborn clothes - my child was 8.5lb even though I was small framed
Baby Monitor & Video - I just preferred to listen out for my child. I'm a techie at heart and love gadgets, but they made me more nervous and paranoid vs relaxed
Receiving blankies - my baby would break out of them from day one, despite nurses doing pro swaddles. In the Fall, I just used light muslin blankies during the day and swaddlers then went to heavier blankets in the winter.
Snow Suits - couldn't take a newborn out in heavy winter weather. For the car, the Jolly Jumper was best and easy to get my baby in and out of the car seat. Exception is if you go for winter walks where the weather isn't too cold.
Burp Clothes - just used blankies, bibs, and bamboo baby wipes (for milk cleanup)
Baby Hats & Mitts - again my baby kept pulling them off. Try and see if they will wear them before you invest in more!
Maternity Belts - they were uncomfortable and too warm during a Summer third trimester pregnancy
Baby Bjorn Carrier - baby got tall and heavy too fast, so it killed my back to have him in there for extended periods of time
Baby Shoes - I am a huge shoe lover, but these were a waste as they were rarely worn or outgrown too fast. When first learning to walk they are better off are feet
Baby Crib Set - you can`t use the bumper or other stuff. Just a crib sheet (for safety reasons) so it`s money thrown away
Maternity Wear - the selection we had were ugly and/or very expensive. I just bought Ralph Lauren jersey dresses up a size or two (not too much in advance) when they were on sale and paid 25-50% of the price I would have spent otherwise. Best part is they stretch well, retain back to original shape, and are stylish so I could use them again afterwards!
