Moms, help!

So I'm in this phase in my pregnancy where all I do is worry that I'm doing it all wrong. Paranoid that anything I do will harm the baby! I can't seem to shake it, once I convince myself I'm overreacting I find something new to obsess about. Ugh! I know I'm being a lunatic but is any one else feeling this way!?

  • Yeah, I agree with pp. I think the excessive blogs focused on what not to do/eat while pregnant are doing more harm than good. And remember, drinking and smoking wasn't probibited 30 years ago, so even that stands to be something that I think you would have to do in excess to really do harm (though I'm not encouraging it, just saying). Seriously, the kid is fine. And if anything were to happen it would most likely be nothing that could have been helped. I worry about the things that can't be prevented by avoiding a medication or cup of coffee, like the umbilical cord wrapping around him and choking him.

But what do I know. I change zero about my life when I'm pregnant. I take my class c meds, since they have been deemed too much of a benefit to me, drink coffee, eat deli meat (had turkey for lunch), eat cheese, eat hot dogs, eat pepperoni, take otc pills, lay on my stomach and on my sides, and everything else most people suddenly become freaked out about. My 21 month old is fine.

  • I'm sorry you're feeling that way.  I felt like that in first trimester but I feel like I've gradually become a little more lax about things as time has gone on.  I still worry about things like soft serve and hot dogs even though I know many women still eat these things and have perfectly healthy babies. I just don't want to be that one instance where something goes wrong, you know?  I hope your fears and concerns start easing up on you soon!

FTM here but I was a psychopath my first trimester-thankfully it was a night and day transition for me once I got to second

At the rec of someone on this board I picked up a book called Something Better. It's a data centered book around all the pregnancy "rules" and then gives data to back up what to worry about versus what not to. It really appealed to my style and I think helped ease me into this more laid pack pregnant chick I am today.

FYI it does say you are cool to drink a glass of wine when pregnant which really turns some people off so just something to be aware of when considering whether to look at it. I myself do have the occasional glass. Ooooooh. :)

I think I need to get this book for my husband! He is more paranoid than I am. It took me weeks to get him to agree to sushi.

  • Thanks everyone! This is my second pregnancy and I can't seem to stop worrying! I know it'll pass hopefully sooner rather than later.
  • It sucks to feel that way. But whenever I start to worry, I think about the women back then. Hard working women they didn't know that lifting would 'effect' the baby or certain foods could effect them. During my first trimester I did a lot of worrying but I found that yoga helped a lot. If you don't know any yoga moves just do stretching with your favorite music.:) best of luck
  • The way I think of it is that cavewomen didn't know all these "rules" (Like sleep on your left side!) and clearly humans are still going strong, so it's all good.  You have to pick and choose what rules are important to follow.  Like, my DH doesn't want me eating any deli meat so I haven't to humor him, but I think that's silly.  I'm trying to limit artificial sweeteners (diabetes) but I haven't cut them out because I'd go nuts.

Just avoid the obvious bad things - smoking, drugs, and alcohol and you'll be fine.
