Breastfeeding

The Healing Powers of Breast Milk

My best friend called me yesterday with an "odd request"; she asked if she could have a few oz of my BM. I didn't even hesitate to say yes (thanks to OS I have a huge stash), but I asked what she needed it for. (Her daughter is 7 so I know she wasn't feeding it to her!) Turns out, though, that she has conjunctivitis and the best remedy for it is breast milk. They don't have medical insurance right now due to her husband switching jobs. So my husband drove to meet her hubby and give him "the stuff". It must have looked like a shady drug deal and I almost wish a cop had stopped them to ask questions. Lol.

No point to this post other than to say that I'm learning every day how awesome BM is! Anyone else have a story about using BM for something other than feeding LO?

Re: The Healing Powers of Breast Milk

  • Nothing like that, but several times since DD was born 7 months ago I've developed very mild symptoms of whatever illness she has. I like to think that it's natures way of infecting me not so much that I'm too exhausted to take care of her, but just enough so I can develop the antibodies that she needs to fight her illness.

  • Actually yeah, I have used it to help clear our his tear ducts when he was a newborn. Our pedi recommend it along with a little massage to work out any gunk stuck in it.

  • Yep, I've used it on my LO's clogged tear ducts, chapped lips, scratches/bumps, cradle cap/dry skin and on my own nips in the beginning.

All of this. It's amazing -- really helped heal scratches and clogged tear ducts.
  • @theresat858 I don't know what kind of programs there are in NJ. I know that we can sign up for a program called COBRA which allows you to keep the same benefits you had with the previous employer until you get new coverage, but it's un-subsidized and it costs a fortune (for a family plan it's around $2k a month). I don't know about any programs specifically for kids as I've never had a need to look into it. They have new insurance kicking in August 1st, and if she doesn't get better they'll bite the bullet and go to a clinic.

@LunaBug924- They should take her to the pediatrician over the clinic- it will be cheaper! Urgent cares/ER's are always more expensive.  We were in this similar scenario, 28 days without insurance due to a job change. LO of course ended up getting sick, then sicker, then having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic, so 3 visits total. They do have various government programs available, but if they're only a week away, they should just pay out of pocket for the peds visit and probable antibiotic. They could also call the pedi and explain the situation and if especially if she's had pink eye before, they might just call her in a prescription.  It's up to them if course- but if it were my kid, I wouldn't be messing around with pink eye, untreated, it can cause issues.
