Working moms!!

Trying to wrap my head around logistics if you could share some insight/experience...

1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

(Breastfeeding moms...)

2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

Re: Working moms!!

  • I don't BF, so but I can answer #1.

She usually naturally wakes between 4:30-5:30. My alarm goes off at 5, so if she's not awake yet I usually pack my stuff for the day, wash bottles , start my coffee . Then I'll make her bottle and usually feed her between 5:30-5:45 then get her ready for the day. I really just want to see her before I go to work :) !

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then? I begin waking LO up within the hour that I leave for work. So, I usually leave about 8:45, I try to breast feed him between 7:30-8:30 depending on when he wakes up. He eats every 2-2.5 hours.

    (Breastfeeding moms...)

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump? Milk pumped from the day before. On Mondays, usually supplemented with a bit from my freezer stash since I work half days on Friday and don't pump 1/3 of what I usually do.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed? My daycare is requesting the I bring the bottles already prepared so that all they have to do is warm them up.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session? LO nurses between 7:30-8:30. Once I get to work I pump 3 times during the day between these times depending on when I can get away: 10:30-11:00, 2-2:30, 4:00-4:30.

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then? Neither DH nor I have really strict office hours; DD usually wakes up on her own while we're getting ready, but occasionally, I'll have to wake her up.

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump? Both. They have a stash of frozen for emergencies and extra, I send fresh from the previous day Tues-Friday (Mondays I bring in frozen milk from my stash: it would be Friday's pump, but I have enough I'm cycling through my older stuff. Daycare uses their older stuff… so anyway, we're all cycling through using the older frozen milk!).

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed? I portion, but they combine and separate as needed. The only thing I wonder about one larger container is that the milk may separate… but I'm probably over thinking it!

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session? I go for at least 2-2.5 hours between nursing and pumping sessions (so in the AM, about 2 hours after she nursed and in the PM, not less than 2 hours before I'll see her again--because she wants to nurse 99% of the time, plus a pump in between). ETA: I pump for 20 minutes--with one 25 minute session thrown in during the day if possible--because those were the arbitrary amounts suggested to me by a LC.

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then? (Breastfeeding moms...)

I wake her at 6:30 and nurse her, then sometimes she falls back to sleep and stays in our bed asleep until about 8:00, after she goes back to sleep I pump (within 5 mins of finishing nursing), then I nurse her again at 8:00 right before I bring her downstairs to my mom for the day

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

I give my mom 16 oz. broken up, so: the milk I just pumped that morning in a bottle, then 3 more bags of 4 oz. each, she goes to DC 1 day a week and a few weeks ago I gave her 2 frozen bags to keep in her freezer in case she ever runs out

     3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

I always portion it out for my mom or DC

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

I pump 3 times a day at work, on a perfect day they are at 10:30, 1:30, and 3:30

  • 1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

I make sure she is up by 7 to give us time to nurse/get her dressed and get out the door. Usually though she is up way before 7 so it's a non issue.

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

Tuesday-Friday is fresh from the day before, Monday I pull from my freezer stash (I freeze anything I've pumped from Friday)

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

I portion everything out. I have small container bottles with a lid that I send. I know some places like one large container though. I would check and see which way they would rather it.
    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

I only pump twice a day, and I still have a larger output than what she drinks during the day. I usually nurse her the last time around 7a, my first pumping session (largest of the day) is usually around 11a and then the last one is usually around 2:30-3p. Some days though I have to plan around meetings and have to space them out differently of course.

I know how you are feeling. I freaked out before coming back to work and those first few weeks back. You will get into your own routine and find what works for you. And just to let you know...one day you will forget your flanges, or your power cord, or your bottles or some other necesity when it comes to pumping... :)
  • 1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then? I either feed him when he wakes up naturally because it's usually around 6, which is when I get up and start getting ready for work anyway. If he is still asleep when my alarm goes off, I'll get myself ready first and then wake him up about 30 mins before I leave so he can eat and I can change him & get him dressed.

    (Breastfeeding moms...)

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump? Mine is usually fresh from pumping the night before or that morning. A few times my supply was short, so I included a frozen bottle or two.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed? I imagine you could do it either way, by using bottles vs using a thermos or something, but I always portion. I know that lo eats between 5.5 and 6 oz per sitting, so I fill each bottle to the 6 oz mark and that way I don't have to worry about him eating not enough/too much. Also, I know he will do 4 bottles over the 8 hour period I'm at work, but I always pack 6 just in case he has an extra hungry day. grandma (who watches him) also has one tub of formula on hand at all times just in case there is a food emergency.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session? I pump just before bed, usually around 9 pm. I also pump when I wake up, usually around 7:30 am. If I pumped around lunchtime my supply would be a bit better, but I don't like pumping at work and I make enough for lo. (about 16 oz per pump session). nursing varies....some days I feed him before I pump so I can pump faster and be done. some days I nurse in the middle of the day. it all depends on what we have going on. I will say that I notice a difference in my output if I nurse within a few hours of pumping ( I get less). this is ok on weekends but for weekdays if I nurse I make sure to do it either after pumping or at least 3-4 hours before so I can pump enough to fill bottles for the next day.

  • 1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

She wakes around 4 am to nurse and then up around 7. I will nurse her then or if we are running late and/or she wakes late I will have daycare feed her right away and I pump quick before work at 8.

    (Breastfeeding moms...)

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

Daycare gets 4 fresh bottles on monday then I send fresh everyday. She usually only drinks 3 so the extra gets bumped down the week. They have a deep freezer there to keep a weeks worth but I think I sent them 1 days worth just as emergency. I havent used any frozen yet.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

Portion out. I use Dr. Brown so I give them clean "guts" on monday and just send fresh bottles everyday with the screw cap on top. I found these ridiculously cute labels on Inchbug that say " I belong to Scarlett Mae ____" that can be washed, microwaved, steamed etc and dont come off the bottle. I use a dry erase marker to date the top of the cap.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

I pump at 9,12,3 everyday at work. Nurse to bed at 7 and pump and 10 before bed.

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

I BF but I wake her up to feed her before I leave to avoid using any additional milk while I'm gone.
    (Breastfeeding moms...)

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

I do usually leave my MIL with the fresh milk just for her convenience. Then, she thaws milk as needed throughout the day.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

I send all milk in breast milk storage bags. Usually, they're just portioned from pumping.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

I pump once before work (before her morning feed) and twice at work. Ideally, I would pump three times at work but two is more realistic. So far, I have been able to keep up with her demand. *knocks on wood* My first pump at work is usually 4 hours after my first morning pump.

I've been back at work for almost two months and we're still going strong. Hang in there. I think it's a small price to pay to give your baby what they need, mommy milk! I hope this helps.

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

I put him to bed at 7pm so he wakes on his own between 6-7am which is when we need to get up.  I nurse him when we wake up and usually again before we leave the house around 7:45am.
    (Breastfeeding moms...)

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

I send the previous day's milk fresh.  Right now I'm battling thrush so I'm not freezing any, but before I was freezing Fridays to rotate my stash on Monday.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

I send what I pump in my pump bottles, so they're always different amounts.  But daycare and I have agreed that 4 oz is a good size bottle for him, so that's generally what they'll do.  Sometimes they'll give him another ounce or two if he still seems hungry later, but they never make a bottle bigger than 4 oz.  They keep one bottle to feed him with there and they just fill that with the right amount from my pump bottles and warm it in the feeding bottle.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

I nurse at 7:45 -ish and generally pump sometime between 10am and 11am for the first time.  Then I pump again between 2pm and 3pm.  If I'm short for the next day, I'll add a pump in at home after he goes to bed, but I generally can pump enough in those two sessions during the work day.

  • With DD1, I took her to a daycare center, so replying based on that experiance:

    1) Do you wake LO so you can feed at a specific time before leaving for work or wait til s/he naturally wakes and deal with it then?

(Breastfeeding moms...) Depends.  Usually she would wake up on her own between 5AM-6AM.  She was the world's best baby and would just hand out rolling around in her crib until I was ready for work at 5:45AM.  I'd go in change, dress, and BF her then.  I would have everything packed and ready to go the night before, so in the morning we just had to grab and go.  We would leave at 6:30AM every morning. Her internal clock/routine was set and she woke at the same time, even on the weekends.

    2) Do you leave the daycare/sitter/etc with frozen BM or fresh from a previous pump?

I way over produced (still do) so the girls get a combination of frozen and fresh (not mixed together, but 9am bottle may be frozen milk, 12PM bottle might be pumped the day before milk, etc.) I used the forzen all within 3 mos of freezing it to be on the safe side.

    3) I'm sending him to a daycare. Should I portion out the servings or is there a way to send milk in one larger container and they can pour as needed?

I portioned out the bottles, marked every piece with her name or initials, and put on them what time she was to have them. I always sent 1 extra bottle along too, incase it was needed.  The milk was in a communal fridge (shared by the infant and wee toddlers) so I wanted to make sure it was not mixed up with anyone elses milk.

    4) What times/how often do you pump? Also, how long after your morning nurse session is your first pumping session?

Initally, I nursed at 6 AM, pumped at 10 AM, pumped at 2PM, nursed at 5PM, and pumped at 10PM.  When she started on solids, I started only pumping at 12PM (dropped the 10AM & 2PM and the 5PM nursing).  I was pregnant a month later.
