Baby safe laundry detergent

What do you ladies plan to use? Has anyone thought to explore options of making their own? Have a good recipe to share?
Im am by no means all natural, but I like to buy local whenever I can and limit all of the extras that seem to be consuming everything! Thoughts?

Re: Baby safe laundry detergent

  • We just washed everything using one that is "no fragrance," but I'm a newb, and maybe we are doin' it wrong.

  • Also, piggy-backing, I did not use fabric softener, but that really sucked. Are there baby-safe fabric softeners?

  • I'm going with a "free and clear" detergent per Baby Bargains. I've never made detergent bc I'm lazy and by no means a Martha Stewart. A good friend of mine has and she loves it. I'm sure Pinterest has a gazillion recipes.

  • @SPurp13 I plan on doing the same thing- scent free for sensitive skin.

  • Tide Free & Clear has worked great for us!

  • We will use Tide Free and Clear.  I was wondering about fabric softener too...I hate how my clothes feel when I don't toss in a dryer sheet.  I use the free and clear version of those, but I read I shouldn't even do that because it can damage the fireproof-ness of kid's sleepwear.

  • All Free & Clear and we use the Free & Clear fabric softener.  We didn't at the beginning with DD but after about 6 months I think, we started using it.

Plus, we had that dryer bar in all the time so I guess that was breaking the rules...but she lived!

  • We use all free and clear. And I always through a dryer sheet in the dryer.

  • I got $8.00 off the huge bottle of dreft so i'll be trying that out first.. After that the tide free & clear - I've heard just as good reviews on that!
  • We used dreft with our first and I always used a drier sheet.  I might go with all or tide free and clear this time around b/c the HE version is a little easier to find.

We started washing our son's clothes with ours right before his first birthday- it started with one or two things slipping into our piles and eventually became that all of his stuff was with ours.  He didn't seem sensitive to regular tide or fabric softener so we went with it.

I bought the Honest Company detergent, but I haven't used it yet.

  • Going to use a free and clear version of all or tide.

We are going to use that as our only detergent for our own clothing and linens as well because the baby will be held by us and on our linens all the time.

  • I've heard the Target Up&Up brand is really good (and a comparison to Dreft). But. I have no experience with it yet.

  • You're good with anything "free and clear". I personally use Dreft for the first year just because I love the smell! There are certainly cheaper options... I use Tide free and clear for my one year old. The regular tide gives him a rash. It's still too harsh for his skin.
  • We use either Seventh Generation or whatever free & clear is on sale (depending on the week I'm buying it), and we use the same thing for everyone's clothes.  It makes me feel a little better about all the chemicals involved in laundry detergent.  For a while at the beginning, I quit using drier sheets on DD's stuff, but she was still exposed to it on my clothes, so I didn't think it mattered.  She's never had sensitive skin anyway.  With this baby, I'll probably continue using drier sheets and if it turns out he has some skin sensitivity to them, I'll stop.

I do love the smell of Dreft stuff, though.  Someone gave me a bottle of Dreft stain spray at my baby shower, and I used the hell out of that stuff.  When it ran out, I bought the BRU brand and it smells the same, though.

  • For everything but cloth diapers, we are going to use Tide Free and Gentle (what we currently use) and scent free fabric softener.  Cloth Diapers get regular powdered Tide without any fabric softener.

  • I think I might buy one bottle of Dreft to start with because all I hear are raves about the scent. After that I'll just go Free & Clear.
  • I want pods since they r easyer to use insted of hauling around a bottle each time i go t the laundry room at my apartments we have everything in pods now i just need some for baby clothes
  • Charlie's laundry detergent.

  • I used All free and clear last time, but have been using homemade detergent for a while now. I'll probably switch back to the All at first to see if baby's skin is sensitive. I used Rock N Green for my diapers, but it's getting pricey and harder to find, I may switch brands this time.

  • You really need to read the labels if you are concerned about what you are putting on your baby. Most "free and clear" brands are no different than any other. Still contain "fragrance". Reading the bottle is the only way to know.

We used whatever Free and Clear they had at Costco at the time.

To help with the lack of dryer sheets (which I'd totally forgotten about) we used dryer balls.

  • I make my own, and I use a modified version of the "Duggar Family recipe" (I know this is a really well known recipe, but their family website does a good job of explaining how to make it.)   https://www.duggarfamily.com/content/duggar_recipes/30455/Homemade%20Liquid%20Laundry%20Soap-%20Front%20or%20top%20load%20machine-%20best%20value

I modify it by using a bar of Dr. Bonner's Baby Mild soap instead of the Fels-Naptha soap.  I find the Dr. Bonner's in the natural foods and body care section of my grocery store.  The recipe makes a ton, so feel free to half it, but it's super easy to make.  I think the hardest part the first time I made it was finding enough jugs to store it in.  I use this same detergent on my husbands dirty tree work clothes, and it does a good job of getting stains and the stink out.  On the CDs, I use a blend of borax, washing soda, and oxygenated bleach (oxy-clean).  It only requires a tablespoon per wash, so a little goes a long way.

As far as fabric softener goes, if I need it, I use white vinegar, here's the ehow:

Looking back on this post, I may look super crunchy, but really I'm just cheap, I don't like chemicals around my family, and DH is a cancer survivor, so I really just try to keep the harsh stuff away.

Me: unexplained infertility - annovulatory DH: testicular cancer survivor!! TTC since June 2009 BFP May 11, 2012 EDD January 24, 2013 June 1, 2012 - first u/s, heartbeat 124 BPM!! • All the suggestions for Tide Free and Clear...DH is allergic to Tide. Rawr. We've been using Scentsy with no problems, but I don't want to risk it, so we'll probably get some Seventh Generation or something like that.

I've made the laundry sauce, which is perfect for sensitive skin. The only problem we ran into is it was grittier than it should have been. I'll probably just make powdered next time, especially since I'm lazy and didn't like having to put it directly into the washer when there's a compartment for that.

  • All Free & Clear and Seventh Gen Baby Free & Clear mostly, but also used Ecover.  We also use wool dryer balls for clothes instead of dryer sheets.  I mostly just don't care about the extra scents because babies smell so delicious all on their own without the fragrances.
