Who wrote your breast pump perscription?

My insurance is requiring a prescription, but I'm not sure who should write it?  Is it something my doctor writes or the pediatrician?

Re: Who wrote your breast pump perscription?

  • My doctor gave me one at my appointment last week.  With my first the doctor wrote the rx but only after I had the baby so it seems to vary.

  • I would ask your insurance company.

The Dr. would write the rx. I ordered mine online through Byram Healthcare and it shipped yesterday. They called the office and got the rx. It was surprisingly hassle free.
    Ditto to this, exactly.

^ This. Make sure to know your insurance plans policy, as each insurer will very likely have their own process. I would think your OB or GP would be able to handle a prescription for you if required. For mine, I originally thought a prescription would be required & expected that the request would need to be made on a certain date (EDD, birth, etc.) However, when I called to inquire about the process with BCBS Federal & they actually didn't require anything - it was shipped immediately & I just received it yesterday.
  • The NP wrote one for me on Monday

I also ordered through Byram Healthcare. It was super easy and they called the doctor I assume. It took a few days for that then when it shipped I got it the next day. I think it depends on how your insurance works and who they want you to order the pump from.

  • My OB.  I faxed the scrip to a DME supplier in-network for my insurance and they checked everything with the insurance, confirmed coverage, and ordered the pump.  Once the baby is here I can go and pick up the pump; my insurance does not allow delivery until postpartum.  The DME supplier also will ship the pump or I can send a proxy - they made the process very easy.
  • My insurance gave me a request form that I turned around and gave to my Dr.  They filed out the paperwork and sent that with an RX back to my insurance company.  Haven't gotten further than that, but it seems like the Dr's office will handle the paperwork for you.

  • I got mine through National Rehab (1800-451-6510). They were SO EASY to work with and they took care of everything. I was so surprised. They called my insurance, emailed me my choices, everything. So simple. Check them out.

My doctor wrote mine.  I called my insurance company back in February (Cigna) and they said to get a prescription at 36 weeks.  I went through Care Centrix, faxed my prescription, and received my pump, a Medela PISA, three days later.

This is who I have...  My doc gave me the script, just need to call on it and get it faxed in.  Sounds like something to do at work tomorrow since I don't want to really work :)

  • Oddly my insurance did not require one, but the medical device provider from which I ordered the pump did. My OB's nurse sent it to them.

My OB. I just asked for it and voila! There it was.

    This.
  • My OB. My insurance gave me a list of medical supply stores in the area that carried the pumps. I took the prescription to them and got my pump.
Although now I just found out I probably can't breastfeed, so it was all for naught. Guess I should take it back.

  • My OB wrote one at 35 weeks.

  • At our hospital tour, the guide said my nurse can write one up and then we can get the pump right there in the hospital store. Now that sounds easy peasy to me!

  • We didn't end up needing the prescription for coverage but it would have been OB.
