Trying to Get Pregnant

Anyone know or hear of anyone getting cervicitis (a cervical infxn) from doing self cervical checks?

I've been drenching myself in the literature and understand that there is a risk of infection pretty much anytime you introduce a foreign body into your cervix (whether it be the penis, fingers, or other "tool") but I would like to add this to my bag of tricks for checking my fertility...as long as the risk doesn't outweigh the benefits.
Anyone have opinions or stories?

  • I think as long as you wash your hands before sticking your fingers up there, and disinfecting any objects you may want to use, you should be ok.  Just pee afterwards, just in case? Anyone else? I've never heard of cervicitis before. I shouldn't have drank so much wine tonight.

  • As long as she pees, she should be ok.

  • lol sounds about right...
Somehow I had decided to separate actually touching the cervix in a non-sexual manner from other objects being placed up there into two different categories of risk...and worked up an awesome idea that clearly there is a difference and the risk was, well, risky.
Man this is gonna be a long haul if my brain keeps chugging like this...
    Nail trimming is commencing.
    Thanks Ladies.

I think a tag is in need here. @holly628
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.
  • @EllyD14, how do I redeem myself after such an utter fail? I was thinking of peeing to prevent infection, but I must not have been thinking clearly.  Can I blame it on the alcohol??  :-/

hahaha. You're fine. Alcohol has made me fail at reading a million times and I'm sure it will again. As long as you get it now that's all that matters.

I think Holly is thinking of the need to pee after sex to prevent infections. That's because the motion of sex can push fluids like semen into your urethra and cause UTIs if not cleared out promptly. That has NOTHING to do with cervix checks... totally different area of your anatomy.

@holly628 it's ok, I got you girl, I speak wine fluently

@apresmoi, I heart you.  My body is hating me right now at work.

  • I used to manage clinics where we performed a lot of d&c. We always always always used sterile instruments and kept the field sterile. I was an absolute fascist about this with my staff. However, some patients would come in to their follow up with cervicitis. It's actually a very common infection. It's like a cold. For your cervix. Anyway, it seemed like some women were more prone to it than others. We told them nothing in the vaginal for two weeks, but who knows what went up there. I think it's totally safe to touch your cervix as long as you're being hygienic, but yeah, the more you do it, the more likely you will be to get an infection. And you don't want cervicitis in an early pregnancy.
