a little freaked out...recall on plums, peaches, and nectarines for listeria

So I got an automated call from the grocery store saying that they have pulled the plums, peaches, and nectarines due to listeria.  I went to the store and thankfully its only a certain brand that it was found on, but they pulled everything just in case.  I get home and i have a bag of plums sitting on my counter that are this certain brand.  I already put a call in to my obgyn...but not really sure if they can do anything anyway except maybe to monitor me?

Ugh...just not fun news to hear.

Re: a little freaked out...recall on plums, peaches, and nectarines for listeria

  • Did you eat any of the plums? Did they touch anything else?

I think toss them (or return them and get your money back if you want) and then wash your hands. From a quick google, itt sounds like it's a bacteria that's mainly transmitted by consuming the infected product, so if you didn't consume it you're probably good.

If you did eat one of the plums, I would definitely put a call in to your OB and see what they would prefer you to do. They might put you on a prophylactic course of antibiotics.

  • With in the past week and a half I have eaten probably 3 of them.

I put a call in this afternoon to my OB but still haven't heard back.  If I don't hear anything today I will call again first thing in the morning.

I have already contacted my grocery store and they are reimbursing me for all the plums and peaches I have bought since June 1st which is great, but the health of my baby is way more important to me.
  • From my knowledge of listeria (which isn't great but I do know a couple of people who have gotten infections over the years) there are two types of infections: Invasive and non-invasive.

The invasive version of listeriosis usually means lots of symptons and generally a stay in the hospital.  Non-invasive the bacteria sits in the intestine and there can be only mild to no symptons.  My understanding is both are dangerous for baby but you have to be more worried with invasive as the bacteria have to reach the fetus in order to infect it.

Your doc will probably watch you and may put you on antibotics if they are worried that you have the bacteria but you aren't feeling super sick you are probably safe from an invasive infection.

I would assume that because your OB didn't react right away that they aren't immediately worried which I would say is good news.

  • What grocery store recalled the fruits?

  • what state do you live in? I just bought necterines.
  • I had bought my produce from Wegmans.  I live in New York, but according to the staff I talked to at Wegmans yesterday the brand Sweet 2 Eat is the product that contained the listeria and as a precaution recalled all nectarines, peaches, and plums from the store.  Sweet 2 Eat is shipped from California.

the nectarines that I've been eating are involved in this recall.  My midwives just said to monitor for signs of symptoms of listeriosis (they will be flu like) over the next month-two months.  Yes, it can take that long for the illness to prevent itself.  If I develop any, then they will run a blood test and get me started on antibiotics.  Nothing to do in the mean time but wait and see.
Good to know...I finally got a call from my OB this morning and he said the same thing.  Hopefully we are all safe and good to go.
  • I have read some people posting on blogs that their doctors are having them do blood tests *AS A PRECAUTION* even if they don't have symptoms. My doctors said they don't do this, but if it is an accurate way of ruling it out, I DEFINITELY WANT THIS DONE! Has anybody else heard of or spoken with their doctor about doing this-- to be extra safe?
This is not something I want to mess around with.
  • I spoke to my OB this morning (I had the recalled brand) and they said that the only way to test is a spinal tap, which they'll only do if you're sick (for obvious reasons). Told me to monitor for the symptoms and call immediately if I start experiencing anything. The recall also included Giant and Martin's.
