Carolinians, come in! (NBR)

We're going on vacation in about 2 weeks from PA to Garden City, SC, which is about a half hour south of Myrtle Beach. I've never been down thataway. We're driving down, starting after work on Friday the 8th. Driving maybe 3-4 hours and stopping to sleep in Virginia. We'll finish the remaining 5-7 hours on Saturday. Most of our drive will be on 95.

I'm looking for any recommendations on where to eat and what to do as we travel through North and South Carolina. If you're familiar with the Garden City and surrounding area, please recommend things to do, too! Also, I know I asked where to eat, but seriously, I love all the food, so tell me where to eat! Isn't Carolina barbeque a thing?

Thanks!

  • Go to Brookgreen Gardens in Pawley's Island, SC and also visit the Hammock Shops. There is a great outlet mall in Myrtle Beach.
    try Kudzu Bakery for Breakfast.
Other good eats- Landolfi's, Austin's, and the fish house with the shark coming through the roof is fantastic!
Make sure to try some hot boiled peanuts! yummmmmm!
Carolina BBQ is mustard-based, so it may be different than what you are used, too- but it is still delicious!

  • I'm in central NC. We usually hit beaches north of Myrtle so I can't suggest much where you will be, but I hope you have a blast and eat lots of good food! And try some Lexington style BBQ if you can find it ;)
  • I'm currently in Charlotte, which is west of where you'll be driving, but I used to live in Rocky Mount- in eastern NC right off 95. You may want to stop at Gardner's BBQ. They have the eastern NC style BBQ (vinegar based) and it's kind if a local staple. Not much else to see in Rocky Mount unfortunately!

OP, come visit me in Raleigh!!!  =D  I'll take you to get BBQ and for dessert we can grab milkshakes at cookout!

Sam's Corner in Garden City is soo good!! They have the best hamburgers and hot dogs. Growing up, my dad would take me there for a father/daughter date and we would visit the arcade next door afterward. ;)

ETA: Murrell's Inlet has a lot of good restaurants with fresh seafood and it's right down the road from you.

Mmmmm....Cookout!  May have to go get a shake this afternoon!
  • I love Garden City, but there aren't a whole lot of restaurants there. You'll probably have to drive into Myrtle Beach, but I'm sure you'll find some fun places!

As you drive through on your way (I'm assuming you're taking 95?), PLEASE try to stop at a Cookout on the road if you can! A Cookout tray is $4.25, I think, and it is so delicious.

Carolina BBQ is a complicated and beautiful thing. Eastern NC (where you will drive) has a vinegar-based sauce whereas Western NC has a sweeter, tomato-based sauce. I think the coast of SC is closer to the Eastern NC style (which is my favorite).

What route are you taking to SC? That could help us suggest restaurants that are on the way!

  • The coast of South Carolina embraces all three BBQ sauces so you can choose from any of the Carolina types of BBQ.   Mustard based, vinegar based and tomato based.  I recommend the Mustard based but I may be biased since i'm from South Carolina.  The North Carolina gals will probably recommend the vinegar based.

Cook-out is the bomb.com!!  They have CHEESE FRIES with CHEESE SAUCE.  Yummmmm

  • I really want cookout for lunch now.  Bitches.

  • Haha I was going to mention Cookout. It was actually the only thing I thought of for restaurant recommendations = fatty.
Seriously though @MindyAndRyan‌, if you see it on your trip make a stop for cajun fries and sweet tea, a burger or a shake. The cookout tray is the best deal. Mmmm.
  • I have always wanted to stop at "South of the Boarder" on 95. It has restaurants, bowling alley, theme park, gas station and so many other random things all with a Mexican theme. Looks like an interesting place. Last time I drove through I was with DH and he refused to stop. Plus we were traveling from Texas and he was just ready to be in Raleigh and be done with the trip. Lumberton NC has some nice places and I love Smithfield NC. I am not familiar with SC at all though.

And sadly I am not a fan of Carolina BBQ (I know its a sin. Sorry, not sorry lol ) but I am from Texas and couldn't get used to it during the 3 years I lived in NC.

Mmm, Cookout. I am so going to get a mint Oreo Shake this afternoon. Yum!
  • @krgriffin26, I thought I was the only one who isn't a huge fan of the vinegar based BBQ.  Our favorite BBQ place in Charlotte is actually one that does primarily tomato based.  It's just better to me.  Although, I can get into some vinegar based slaw.

Damn all of you for bringing up Cookout shakes!  Now I really want one of the Cheesecake ones!!  :)

  • We're en route to South Carolina right now, and we're about to stop at Cook-Out in Selma, NC for late lunch. I also bought us tickets to go to Brookgreen Gardens this week. And what is this Bojangles chicken? Is it good? I love fried chicken!

  • Bojangles has all kinds of chicken and biscuits. My favorite is their Cajun filet biscuit. It is just a fried chicken breast with Cajun seasoning on a biscuit, but is is yummy! Try the shakes at Cook-out. They are to die for!
  • Bojangles is pretty good!!!!
