So, since DS is gone for 2 weeks I am looking for some good reading material. I am pretty open to any genre as long as it is well written. Any suggestions?
I'm reading The Goldfinch (by Donna Tartt) right now and I'm really into it. I haven't finished so I can't tell you if it's going to crash and burn but I've really enjoyed the story. It won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, which is usually a bit more highbrow than my standard reading tastes but I can't put it down because I'm dying to see how the whole thing wraps up.
I also read The Book Thief and The Storyteller which both came very highly recommended. They were both really good stories, but both a little depressing IMO.
The Book Thief is so good.
Also agree with the Game of Thrones recommendation. Great series.
The Book Thief sounds interesting. Might give that one a try. I have read the whole Game of Thrones Series. Really good books but also can be depressing lol.
I am currently reading Inferno by Dan Brown. I'd recommend any of his books though. I have enjoyed them all.
I like Dan Browne as well and have enjoyed all of his books.....I will read just about anything lol. So many great suggestions here to get a new "to Read" list on the go!
Since you're open to anything, I'm going to break it down by genre.
Classics: The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
Historical Fiction: The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
Non-fiction : The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson
The Rape of Nanking by Iris Chang (just as a warning - both books have parts that are extremely hard to read)
Autobiography: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou (she wrote six autobiographies all worth reading, but this is the first one)
An Autobiography by Janet Frame
YA: The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater (this is a series, so far only the first two books are out)
Thriller/Suspense: The Boys from Brazil by Ira Levin
Underrated books/authors: Tevye the Dairyman and the Railroad Stories by Sholem Aleichem (his books are depressing and funny at the same time, I'd also recommend his book Wandering Stars)
My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy (a retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid)
Towards Another Summer by Janet Frame
Thanks so much for taking the time to break it down and provide so many great suggestions with some commentary! The only one I have read is East of Eden so lots of promising leads there. You guys will have me stocked until Christmas!
I'm currently ready Alice in wonderland..going to read Peter Pan next. Also in the beginning of a book about Bob Dylan. My mind just can't seem to focus on one book lately.
I have read Alice in Wonderland years ago but not Peter Pan. That could be interesting. I was thinking of reading the original Mary Poppins after watching Saving Mr Banks. Mary Poppins was my favorite movie when I was a kid.

I just finished the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. The last one just came out and it was the first non-school book I've read since LO was born.
Yes I work in a college library of all places. Do you?
I'm at a state library.
We mostly provide consulting/services/grants to the smaller public and K-12 libraries and do books by mail for state residents who are either homebound or are in a rural area with no public library.
Re: Book Recommendations
my read shelf:
--any book by Chelsea Handler
