Traveling with a Toddler

So we have yet to do any traveling really with DS outside of a few long car rides. I am in a new job where I am going to be traveling every few months. For the most part I will have a day of work and come home, so usually I will just go alone. I have the opportunity to go to San Francisco in October, though, and the day I need to work is a Saturday. I could reasonably extend the trip and take a few days off and make a trip out of it for our family - DH would just be alone with DS on Saturday. He's really worried about the flights, though. Most of the options I've seen have layovers, but we would still need him to sit fairly still for hours on end on a plane. Has anyone done this with their toddler yet? DS is extremely high energy so I'm just so afraid that I will convince DH that it's ok for him to go and then it will be awful. The other option is to leave him with my parents but I'd really rather him come with us because there are some pretty cool kids things!

Re: Traveling with a Toddler

  • Our flight was only and hour and forty minutes. So it was really short. J did great through most of it although he didn't sleep but a wink literally as we were landing in Denver. I took a whole bag of "tricks" and the only thing he liked was his snacks, his sippy of milk and the iPad with episodes of Bubble Guppies and MMCH on it. Otherwise he just wanted to jump from lap to lap and try to go out into the isle.

With that said, take him! But get him his own seat!

  • I haven't done any long flights with DD yet - we did a 1.5 flight this past spring, which was much easier than I thought, and we're flying down to San Diego on Thursday, just a 45 minute flight. No advice,  I think you should go for it, though!  It sounds like a blast.

  • We have flown with DD twice now. Once at 9 months when she was a lap child (she slept or ate most of the time). Once at 15 months. We got her her own seat and had her in her car seat, we brought new toys, coloring books, magna doodle, dvd player and dvds, and lots and lots of snacks. It went fine.

  • Just remember, there is always an end in sight.
Our last flight several toddlers all gathered in the back and had a dance party.
I suggest the following; snacks, a magna doodle (crayons can get thrown), iPad or iPhone, toddler headphones, books, and sitting in the very back of the plane.
H is VERY high energy and has flown 18 times now, never sleeping once.  Some flights have been better than others, but in the end, most flight attendants are super helpful and people are understanding.  I've had several ask me if I want them to hold him so I can use the restroom.
    best of luck!

  • I definitely think you'd be fine. I'm not sure where you're flying from but even with a layover it shouldn't take more than like what 8 hours? On the flight he can get out of his seat and in the airport during the layover he can run around.

Traveling isn't always easy with a kid but we definitely think it's worth it!
