kissing baby on lips?

Just saw ILs kiss baby on lips. It surprised me (although it is not that shocking). I'd prefer they not so that LO doesn't get stuck with cold sores or get the herpes virus on his eczema. There are also papers on spreading peripdontal diaease this way. Am I being reasonable? I had asked DH to communicate my preferences before but apparently that was not done. Should I be the one to confront them? Do you let people kiss your babies on the lips?

Re: kissing baby on lips?

  • No one has really tried with our kids so I'm not sure how I'd handle it, but if it helps our dentist did tell us that we should avoid it in the beginning. My husband and I waited about a year for our son and will probably do this same for our daughter. Maybe ask your dentist for input?

  • I probably wouldn't bother saying anything unless it was happening super often, like every single day. A kiss or two here and there from a clueless but healthy relative is NBD to me. Not worth raising a stink over at any rate.

  • I personally save kissing on the lips for my DH, so I wouldn't like it if someone did it to my kids since I don't.

My mother already is like all over DS when we visit, I have a feeling she's going to be a little over the top.
  • I do it all the time. He is just so kissable! No one else besides DH does it. I think I would care if someone did it a lot

Yeah lol I guess it depends but honestly we (DH and I) are weirded out when ppl do it with their kids prob bc we didn't have it as kids lol I guess it's just a romantic thing for us so just kisses on face belly hands etc no lips lol

  • I've asked everyone not to until she's older and they have respected it. I'm the only one that does it anyway not even DH. I grew up with it tho so it's not weird to me and she will be kissed once she gets older I'm sure. We are just a very lovable comfortable cuddly family I guess...

I kiss him all over! DH's family isn't very kissy, so i don't think I have to worry about too many other folks trying it.

I'm fine with family kissing him. Other people would bug me. I had no idea that its some sort of no-no. Honestly it seems a bit paranoid to me. Now if you knew that someone had some sort of disease that would be different.

  • I don't want my kid getting cavities so just say no to kissing.

In actuality, I don't care if dh, I, or ds1 kisses ds2 on the lips. I just rather have the grandparents not.

  • Its not that its a no no. JuSt not a preference for some. My only reason is that kissing on the lips is or your so. Doesn't make make us un affectionate or non cuddly or less of a family. Just our preference. There is a lot of love in this house and it's just our style. And i would want relatives friends and strangers to respect that.

You want to kiss your kid in the lips I won't judge or side eye you.
  • I don't kiss my kids on the lips either, only DH. No one in my family ever did so it seems strange to me, but that's the way I grew up. DH kisses his mom on the lips. I haven't noticed either of them do it to the baby though. It would definitely bother me if anyone outside family tried to. OP you said you're worried about herpes, do they actually have it? In that case I would definitely tell them not to kiss the baby.

  • @lica001‌ yeah they have history of cold sores but didn't look currently active.

Update: DH helped explain to his parents preference for no kissing on lips and they were cool with it! Issue resolved :)

Thnx for all the input! Wasn't sure if I was just being a crazy FTM!

The only thing I can think of is she's going on the same principal as don't let your kids eat after you (which I don't follow) because supposedly if you have cavities then there is a bacteria in your mouth and if they eat after you then they will have that bacteria and get cavities too. Except I grew up eating after my parents (both of which have cavities) and currently eat after and kiss DH who has a crap ton of cavities. I'm cavity free. I know it's purely anecdotal but I just have a hard time buying into it.

  • @pistolpackinmomma, what do you mean eat after? Like share food? I feel like a moron reading this thread I'm so out if it...
  • @giggler25‌ yes. Like sharing utensils, cups, you take a bite then give them a bite. Basically any way that your saliva can be mixed with theirs. Let me see if I can find the article again.

  • I don't remember if my parents ever kissed us on the lips, so probably not. But I kiss dd on the lips all the time and so does dh. I don't pay attention that much to my mil or my family doing it unless they are over doing it

    It's a BOY

    ^This.

I'm incredulous about it (and dont know enough about it) but some studies do suggest familial transmission of some oral bacteria.

Doesn't mean that my kids don't drink from my glass or eat from my fork, as my comment was more tongue in cheek than anything.

But bacteria does contribute to the creation of cavities so even without teeth, if you have the bacteria responsible for decay colonizing your mouth then when you do get teeth you will have some cards stacked against you. Add weakened enamel plus carbs then boom! Cavities!
