First Ultrasound Necessary?

Hello everyone! I am pregnant with my second baby. When I scheduled my first OB appointment for 8 weeks they informed me I would not need to schedule an ultrasound along with this appointment as they don't usually do them this early. I definitely had one this early with my first baby. I was looking forward to it. Even thought you can't see much it's kind of exciting. My insurance covers at least two. I am confused as to why I wouldn't have one this time around. Any ideas? I would assume it would be beneficial but maybe not. Kind of disappointed!

Thank you!!!

Tons of doctors elect not to do them until your a/s or 12 week opt in screening. I don't get early u/s unless something is wrong.

  • If insurance only covers one or two- then personally I'd want to wait if I were set this is a healthy pregnancy to see more when they are moving and look more baby like. It seems to be a recent thing insurance only doing like one or two now- I thought it used to be one per trimester? I'm sorry, I know I'd be bummed anyway!!!

  • Ditto to @tunnel‌. I'm having my fourth ultrasound tomorrow (8.5 wks) as I am an ivf patient. Guess that is the way my fertility doc does it. I think it's to determine my estradial dose. This will be my last one with the fertility doc, then I go to my OB, who won't do one for a while.
  • As many have said every office and doctor is different. I didn't have one until 20 weeks with DD. This time they offered one in the first trimester so I jumped on the offer.

Hoping you have an ultrasound soon!
  • They aren't medically necessary in a normal pregnancy at this point. Some doctors do them, just like some doctors prescribe antibiotics for viruses, but that doesn't mean they are necessary. The only difference is, antibiotics are never helpful for viruses, like ever. Whereas in some circumstances, ultrasounds are helpful/useful this early on in pregnancy.
  • With my first they did an u/s at the first visit to verify dates. They couldn't find a heartbeat (I was only about 5 weeks) so they had me come back the following week to check again.

  • No ultrasounds are necessary, really, unless there's a reason to believe there could be an issue.

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone. Very helpful! I am lucky to have a normal pregnancy thus far and my well wishes are with those who are high risk! I will probably touch base with my OB at my appointment to review their scheduling of routine U/S.
  • I will only have two just because i need one to make sure dates are correct and then anatomy

  • Eventually you will have a "first ultrasound"  It just may  be a bit later.  This fact was surprising to me at first too..

Whenever you get your first US it'll be awesome I'm sure, and we'll be here to cheer you on when it happens!

  • If your insurance will only cover 2 I'd just wait to get the a/s and then use the second if a follow-up is needed for whatever reason.  Out of pocket for an u/s can get pricey.

  • My Kaiser office does them at around 8 weeks. I am glad because when I miscarried we discovered no heartbeat at that point. I would have hated to have been further along and discovered no heartbeat. I have my first one with this pregnancy tomorrow and am praying for a heartbeat.
  • Mine will do one for me a 8 weeks because I have a history of loss, but otherwise they don't do one until the anatomy scan and then I had one late in the pregnancy with DS to confirm that he was head down because they thought he might have moved to transverse.

If you get to where you feel you really *need* one for some reason like peace of mind, there are places that do elective ultrasounds, though you do pay out of pocket for them.  I had an elective one with DS at 29 weeks and we saw one of DS's first ever smiles.  I know these sort of u/s sometimes look like creepy alien babies, but look at that sweet little alien baby face!  ;)

  • They are not necessary at all, I don't want any, they are super harmful to the baby, ultra sound has the capability to alter cell formation, I would only do one if medically necessary, size of baby and gender are not medical reasons. I had a prior caesarean so they are requiring I have at least one this time around for positioning or detecting abnormalities but if I could opt out I would, these are so bad! Research it please!

Yeah, I generally don't take research advice from someone who speaks exclusively in run-on sentences.
And let me guess, you won't be vaccinating your kid either?
