sandwiches, mmmm....

During my first pregnancy all I craved was deli meat/deli salads. This time around, just the same! You want what you can't have I guess.  All I want is a meaty roast beef sandwich with mayo, cheese, and lettuce (this was the FIRST thing my husband went out to get me after DS popped out) or some yummy chicken salad on a bagel.

Anyway, so I need to satisfy my sandwich cravings, but I don't know what fillings to look to. Last weekend I did a steak sandwich, not bad. DH keeps telling me to do a cheese sandwich, but can you say boring?

Any ideas?? :)

  • I had the most delicious ham sandwich for lunch.

Like Britt said, heat up the meat if you're concerned, and enjoy!

  • Eat a sandwich.

  • There's nothing wrong with roast beef or chicken salad - supposing its real roast beef and chicken salad. The issue is the potential for listeria in deli meat (though the nitrates aren't great, but they never are). Like the other ladies said, you can always microwave your deli meat as well if you're concerned.
  • Eat the damn sandwich

  • Maybe do a roast for dinner one night and use the leftovers for sandwiches?  If you like chicken, buy one of the rotisserie chickens and slice that thinly for sandwiches...
  • I'm still eating cold sandwiches :)
  • I agree....eat a sandwich! I wanted one a few weeks ago, and finally caved in and had one from Jersey Mike's.....and it was the BEST sandwich I've ever had! LOL

  • You could make your own chicken salad for sandwiches.
  • Just eat a sandwich. This stuff is so, so silly. Everything in moderation and just use common sense. I get mine from my clean grocery store, get Boar's Head for quality, and consume it in 3 days or less.

  • I know exactly what you mean. Sandwiches are just so satisfying! (and they are a great way to sneak in extra protein, veggies and green leafy stuff if like me, you've got second tri queasiness)  Some days, I'm having sandwiches for lunch and dinner because I can't face anything bigger.

If you trust the source, I would say go for it.  And as someone has already suggested, try using leftover roast meat for sands - it's economical and you can be sure the meat was cooked right through if you did it yourself (I've been appealing to friends to save me scraps from theirs - I'm not above playing the pregnant lady card, lol) substitute mayo if you're not sure for stuff like mustard or horseradish - with lettuce, watercress, rocket...there's so much you can do with a good sandwich.

2.0 has been demanding bologna with an obscene amount of mustard lately.  I think the amount of vinegar in the mustard will kill any potential bacteria on the bologna... hahaha.

I ate lunch meats with my first pregnancy and am with this pregnancy.  Even though this time around I have a different OB that gave me a list of stuff not to eat and it's on there, I'm instead going by the line at the bottom of the list that says "Don't worry about a balanced diet when nauseated, eat what you can keep down."  Ok.  Cold cuts.

Edit-- I had hit a comma where I needed a period.

  • I just eat the sandwiches, cold deli meat if that is what I want!  For some reason the thought of heating my deli meat up to steaming just turns my stomach.  I can go to a deli and get a hot sandwich and that is fine, but it is something about heating my own deli meat up at home.  Yuck!

I just buy the good stuff that I know goes fast (Boar's Head - YES!!!).

  • I have been eating a lot if vegetarian sandwiches :) but recently caved in to tuns and chicken salad sandwiches. I had a tuna mg from the hospital visiting my grandpa :( so figured it was safe, I made chicken salad last week and then bought some last night from a market that I trust for fresh foods. I don't like hot deli meats so I'll wait I think. Now that I am in my second trimester I am getting braver with my food. I agreed with making smart choices. I am just splurging alittle on where I get higher risk foods.

I love chicken salad. I make it myself with canned chicken. I usually avoid cold cuts while pregnant but I've had a few hot sandwiches this time around!

  • Funny enough, that's the exact thing I've been craving too! I can't stop thinking about roast beef.
