Night Flailing at 6m: legit concern or JBBB?

Disclaimer: this will be discussed with pedi next week at 6m appointment. And I'm afraid to Dr Google because I'm sure my kid will end up having a neurological issue if I read too deeply.

So, we've been done swaddling for a couple months now: he started rolling and breaking out of everything around the same time. He's in a Magic Sleep Suit which muffles his movements without confining him, and that has been working well until recently.

He's started in the past week doing some intense night flailing and waking himself. I've tried losing the sleep suit in hopes that he'll roll himself to belly and sleep better, but no such luck. He just freaks out more.

I've had to pretty much hold him through the flails until he calms and gets back to sleep. It happens multiple times a night. I've checked comfort: temp, diapers, hunger, pain, room temp - but those don't seem to be factors.

This is coinciding with starting to crawl and scoot, not sure if that would be considered related though?

So, back to question: concern or JBBB?

Re: Night Flailing at 6m: legit concern or JBBB?

  • Could it be that its how he soothes himself and given a bit of time he's flail himself to sleep? My brother was a head banger and would literally smash his head into the mattress face first for a good ten minutes before he fell asleep. N does it with his feet. As long as he can't hurt himself maybe see if it calms him.

@keags5496‌ - I did try to let it run it's course, but he gets more mad and wakes himself fully (for an hour) without intervention.

I have heard of the sleep-headbangers - I'm all for what the kid needs to get to sleep!

  • It doesn't sound concerning but good to mention to your pedi anyway.

DS2 flails when he is uncomfortable. Like if my arm is under his head and he wants to lay flat. He also tosses his head from side to side while falling asleep. LIke @Keags5496 said, that is how he puts himself to sleep.

Have you tried NOT using the miracle suit?! Maybe that is bothering him/hindering his movements?

We went through a week of rough sleep as DS got used to being able to flip over/sleep flat after the rock and play.

  • Have you tried putting him down on his stomach? I know that's a nono so maybe you aren't comfortable with that.

@dunvilles‌ - we do use the RNP for naps and swaddle/tuck just his arms then. I guess using that at night is an option, too. I'll consider that!

@p2k2c4bp2k2 - at this age I'm okay with putting him down on his belly, but unfortunately, he'll have nothing to do with it. He won't fall asleep on his own like that, and he wakes right up if I roll him that way :(

  • Aw, boo. :( I'm sure it is just a phase but that probably doesn't make it any easier to live through!

  • Ava sleeps on her side and Ive given her one of the A&A security blankets to hold on to. She is a flailer and if she is holding on to something she seems to not do it as much.

Sorry @dunvilles, mixed up my tags. I have tried to drop the suit, but I don't get the initial settle down without the suit :(

@megash113‌ - I do understand "babies move sometimes." My question was more about a sudden change from the "sometimes" to multiple times and from just moving to the intensity of flailing.

We're in the same situation too. I had DS2 in the sleep suit because he always startled and kicked himself awake. When he started really rolling all over the place I took him out of the suit because he wanted to sleep on his side, but if he rolls to belly or flat back he starts flailing extremely hard and gets really upset.

I've also tried no intervention for up to an hour, but he just gets more upset and flails even more/harder. Then begins crying he can't settle himself down. All of my tricks for DS1 aren't working for this one. This past week has been terrible sleep. I'm out of ideas.

I've also noticed to that DS2 (will be 6 months next week) is working really hard on sitting unassisted and scooting. So I was chalking it up to working on new skills. I will be interested to see what your pedi says.

  • My little guy does the same thing.. flailing, head thrashing from side to side, violent kicking (in my ribs... hmm, deja vu) when he's trying to fall asleep or still in wakey-sleep-land. Wakes himself right up, even though he's pooped! And cranky. I've checked all the things that might be uncomfortable too, but I think it's just habitual.

It's unsettling, but I'm just going to see if he grows out of it.. oddly enough, even though it wakes him up all the time, it doesn't seem to me like a weird soothing method. Quirky babies!
  • btw what does JBBB stand for? Sorry, so dumbdumb
  • @SgrRay929‌ I did not even realize that the word 'not' was in all caps. Also, the ?! Is a thing I just do.

@versed‌ I didn't mean for 'not' to be in all caps. Didn't notice it until sgrray929 pointed it out. Sorry about that!!!

Never tried the suit, just a thought. Hope sleep gets better for you both. :)

Um, k. But you do realize that it tells readers that you're yelling something, right? That's an odd thing to just do when you're writing to other people.

You want to critique me for putting '?!' Do you even realize that by pointing these things out and the "tone" I get from your posts is very hurtful? "Um, k" comes off as snobbish and rude to me.

I appreciate you pointing out the all caps. I am not liking the public call out from you on how you perceive my typing.

@megash113‌ thanks for the info. Didn't know that (obviously). Love learning new things.

@SgrRay929‌ I do not know the tone you would have used in your posts. It bothered me because my intention was to offer support for OP. Not to yell. Again, I appreciate you pointing out the caps.

@mamajop that is why I posted the above message.

Also, the "?!" is a "thing" I do. Not to be grammatically correct all the time. Just like people posting "Ded., LOL, JBBB, because tired..." etc.

  • Definition of INTERROBANG

:  a punctuation mark designed for use especially at the end of an exclamatory rhetorical question

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question that is asked in order to make a point.[1] The question, a rhetorical device, is posed not to elicit a specific answer, but rather to encourage the listener to consider a message or viewpoint.

"Have you tried NOT using the miracle suit?! Maybe that is bothering him/hindering his movements?"

I believe my "?!" applies in this case.

But that, in combination with the caps, makes it seems like you are asking in exasperated, disbelieving tones.  "HELLO?  Are you listening?  Can you try NOT using the miracle suit?!  DUH."
