What would you do about this?

DS is 4.5, and he has been potty-trained for almost two years.  He doesn't even usually wet the bed.
Lately, he has been peeing on the carpet in his room and in their walk-in closet.  He says it is an accident.
We are at a loss how to get him to stop.
Any advice or experience?

We had that exact same thing happen with DD a few weeks back and she is 4.5 also and has been potty trained for over two years as well. It lasted about a week and then stopped. My daughter seemed sincerely embarrassed about it in the morning and the fact that she had never had a problem waking up to use the bathroom prior to this, I figured it was something she genuinely couldn't control, a growing issue of sorts (not waking up soon enough and stumbling around half awake). So, I didn't want to make her feel worse about it. I cleaned everything up and just reassured her it was OK. It worked itself out.

  • My DD went through a period of accidents when she was 3.5. Turns out she was constipated and couldn't differentiate the urge to pee because her tummy hurt. A couple of days of miralax and all was good again.

  • Any big changes going on at home or for him? I'm heading back to work, had to find a babysitter, etc. and I noticed DS1 suddenly having accidents.

make him clean himself up. get washcloth wash himself, and including washing the undies in the sink. and hanging to dry. and washing spot in carpet. eta: don't be angry though. just say "well honey, I know it was accident but you have to help me clean"etc.
We had something similar around that age with C. We had her help clean it up, but made no big deal about it. I think she was trying to get a rise out of us and when it didn't work, she stopped. At first we weren't sure how to handle it and we made a big deal of it, but that didn't help anything. Good luck!
