When are you going to ditch the bottle?

A friend of mine said she weaned all 3 of her children from a bottle right after their 1st birthday.  Is this the norm?  What is everyones plan?

Re: When are you going to ditch the bottle?

  • I plan to at 1 year because I think that's what my pedi rec. it's going to be weird because I think the bottle before bed really comforts her.

  • I recently talked to DC about this since that's where he gets them. They said after his 1st birthday they'll start doing sippy cups instead of the bottle. I think as long as he gets milk, he doesn't care where it comes from. At this point, I'm thinking it will be MUCH harder to wean him off the breast.

  • With DS1, our pedi said to try to have them off of the bottle by 1 year.  That is what I plan to do with LO as well, although I'm trying to start now because it took DS1 awhile.  He would take his cup all day, but he wanted his bottle at night. I realized he only wanted the feel of the bottle as a soother so we found sippy cup style lids that fit on the bottles so it wasn't so bad.

  • We stopped the bottle and transitioned to cow's milk on DD1's first birthday and never looked back. We plan to do the same with DD2.

  • Carmen only has a bottle at bedtime. At 10 months we are taking it away completely and paci will be taken away at 1 year.

  • Probably right around one year. We will see how it goes.

  • I plan on doing what @rsigler‌ said, in regards to using the sippy cup, one meal a day (with formula) in a month or so. Then transition completely from bottle by November and into WCM.

  • toddler steals her bottles from her brother and has been chewing on the nips so we're running low on those and using sippy cups to fill in the gaps. hopefully there will be no more bottles soon!

  • My plan is one year, but I have a feeling it's going to be tough.  I have tried giving A a sippy cup from 6 months on and she is still not getting it.  I am also sick of washing bottles.  The Born Free ones are a pain in the ass too.

  • How do you get LO used to sippy cups? We've been trying for a few months to get him used to them, but he can't get the hang of em... we've tried the fancy ones that they have to bite and then suck and the normal ones that just drip, and nothing! He's getting frustrated when he can't get anything out, or when it comes out too fast and goes all over him :( He takes probably 5 bottles a day on top of his 3 solid meals... the kid has a hollow leg I swear! I'm really not sure how to wean him off bottles when he's wanting formula more than solids... He's 10 months tomorrow, we measured him at 32" and 21 lbs. Any good suggestions?

  • My dentist advised against sippy cups.  I skipped it and went use with a straw cup or regular cup no lid.

  • Our plan is one year we did with DS too.

  • Once he starts his sippy cup of whole milk around the one year mark, I'll probably still give him a bottle at night for a little while.  With DD, I think I stooped the night bottle and went to sippy cup around 15m or so.

  • He does great with a sippy cup now with his water. Once he turns 1 I'm hoping to switch him completely and get him off bottles. My goal is by the end of the year to be done with them.
  • @lereade - I just started giving DS a sippy cup with water at meal times. In the beginning he'd just throw it or knock it off the table. He now knows what it is and gets really excited about it. He'll let me know if he wants it or not. It's a process. :)

  • I'll start when I start mixing in some whole milk- around 11 months. That what we did with DS and it was fine. It's really a low stress transition for most kids, I think, y'all, I promise. Dd can't figure out a sippy at all, but they learn so much in a month and a half!

  • Once we hit a year my plan is to stop pumping at work and start giving WCM instead of BM while I am at work. We will ditch the bottle in favor of the sippy cup at this point as well. I will continue to BF when I am home until LO weans himself or I lose my supply.

    We'll see how it goes.

  • E doesn't take bottles so she usually has pumped milk in a sippy if I'm gone or I do water in one. We've tried a lot and the momma (from lansinoh) and nuby straw cups are the only ones she's able to do really,

  • Somewhere between 11 and 13 months.  We are already working on sippies.  Once he gets good using them he will get his formula (still measured and mixed in a bottle though) in sippies at meal times so he is used to having 'milk' with his meals.  We will start weaning from the bedtime bottle around then as well.  We did this we DS1 as well.  Not that I am wishing DS2 to grow up faster but I cannot wait to be done with bottles and formula.

  • Our pedi recommended us to have DS weaned off the bottle before he turns one. I'm not too concerned about it so we will probably start the transition around 11 months old.

We will prob try to transition to a sippy for milk one feeding at a time, starting around 10 mos. I'm not super concerned about having her weaned from the bottle by one year for any other reason than I'm sick of washing bottles constantly because the ones we use have 5 separate pieces.
Lemme guess, Dr. Brown's. They're such a pita to wash.
We use the Playtex Ventaire bottles and I cannot wait to get rid of them and their bagillion pieces.

  • I mean what about people who BF...do they have to wean at 12 months?!?! No! So, this is odd to me that pedis are telling to wean at 12 months. Would a BFing mom pump into a sippy cup? So. Many. Questions.

  • I haven't even begun to think about this!  We've been sporadically using a sippee cup with water, but that's about it.
  • I can't wait for the day. Formula is too damn expensive.

  • I guess this would be the silver lining to dd never really taking a bottle. She's all tits or gtfo! But she does love water in the straw sippy.

Well, some pedis do tell moms to wean at 12 months lol.

But to answer your questions, the bottle thing is because it can cause teeth decay and because parents are dumb and put juice and soda in their kid's bottle. But IMO, sippy cups are just as bad as bottles when it comes to teeth decay. And do not get me started on juice and soda given to a baby/toddler in any drinking instrument.

I personally see nothing wrong with a bedtime bottle for a while but it can can cause teeth decay if you don't brush baby's teeth afterwards (which I guess you should be doing now anyway so there's that lol. And I don't brush teeth after the last nursing session because ain't nobody got time to wake up a sleeping baby to brush teeth).

And a lot of BFing moms do ditch the bottle for a sippy, unless you're talking about boob-only babies. Yes DD1 nursed several times a day including right before bed until almost 18 months- no sippies no bottles. Is that a no-no- IDK and IDGAF.

So tl;dr- I'm with @Amjoy25 . Sippies are just as bad for teeth decay, don't give soda and juice, you don't have to wean at exactly 12 months- boob or bottle.

If we agree...then it must be correct. #itsscience

  • DD loves her sippy cup (I have been trying to figure how much water is to much, because she'll chug it all if I let her.) But, I too am worried about that bedtime bottle. When I surveyed my friends with kids 2 and under they were all doing milk or formula at bedtime in a bottle or sippy cup. So I decided to role with it depending on what works for her. We'll see I guess?
