family exercise

With our schedules I can barely find the time to clean up and sleep much less exercise.

All the things I used to do with DH are impossible with my 2 boys.

Any suggestions for family exercise?  DS1 just started walking and DS2 doesn't walk.  I don't think hiking packs would work for us because DS1 is 4 and getting big.

I cannot ride a bike (physically, I have knee problems).   I just feel at a loss.  our only option is to get both kids in the car, get the huge double stroller and drive teh 15 minutes to a park and walk around the boring loop.  Ugh. I am just so sick of being in the house.

  • Is there a pool nearby? Just thinking that would go easy on your knees and also work with 2 non-walking kids.

  • I agree. I think a pool would be a great idea.

Can you join a Y that has adapted sports for the kids? Or at least babysitting so you can at least get some time in on the elliptical?

Can you mix up your walks in the park a bit? Drive to a boardwalk? Or a different park. Maybe find a canal path or something different?

This- our local YMCA has been a lifesaver. When DS was very little the gym daycares were daunting, but the Y caters to kids of all abilities and is used to kids who need added attention. DS just completed the Special Olympics "Young Athletes" program at our local Y. It's an inclusion sports fundamentals program for kids 2-8; he was one of the "typical" kids (since he doesn't have an ID) but he greatly benefited from it with all his gross motor delays. There were kids of all abilities there. It was an hour long and I got to work out while he was in class- win-win!

Being involved at the Y has the added bonus of being there when I need them during school years. DS goes to the Y for school release days. The staff all knows him well and he feels comfortable knowing what to expect. He's also doing to their wildlife nature day camp again this year. During the long doldrums of winter we visit their pool as a family during open swim.

  • @Junebug060609 No pool.  We have a pool but it's not open this season.  It's been unseasonably cold too.

@auntie  The Y sounds great except ours is about 30 minutes away and extremely expensive.

@AA0417  My goal is a light/moderate workout and family bonding time.  Before we had kids DH and I LOVED to hike.  It was one of my goals once we had a family, traveling around and hiking.  But that's out.

One activity LO loves that you could perhaps adapt depending on your LOs' skills is playing "catch" but rolling. If your youngest is able to sit up and at least push the ball a short distance, then you and YH would be moving all over and bending to get and return the ball. Not the most exciting, but it may work. It would grow with the kids' skills too.
I like that idea.  DS1 walks now (falls often but is pretty steady for the most part).  Maybe we could teach him to kick the ball and DS2 could roll it (he doesn't walk at all).
