Walls of different color

So in your houses..... Do you paint all the walls one color or do you mix it up?

We are buying a new house and he seems to think every room needs to be the same wall color.

I did put my foot down and said I was having a green bathroom.

But what does SAHM's think?

  • Different colors for sure but coordinating from room to room. Unless you like rainbows - which I do, so maybe I should repaint my house??

  • Living area is one nuetral color and bedrooms are another. One bathroom is a greenish color and the other is a very light blue. Thinking of changing the blue out for a brown. We have a white vanity, counter and toilet in there and tan shower. I want more contrast.

  • Our downstairs is all the same color (minus one bathroom just having white walls), but there are different colors in each room upstairs.

  • I'm all for color. Our whole first floor is beige. So boring. Painting is on the must-do list.

I think that our color palette is pretty neutral, but different.  Our downstairs, stairway, and hallway upstairs are all the same neutral tone since we have an open concept house.  The bedrooms and bathrooms are different colors, but still flow together.  I subscribe to the color theory that the big stuff (walls, furniture, etc.) should be neutral and the pops of fun color can be in the accent pieces (bedding, pillows, wall art, etc.).

  • My DH agrees with yours and it is an ongoing debate in our house.  My old house had different rooms with red, yellow, and green walls.  I loved the color.

Our new house is neutral. Our family room has beige walls, beige carpet, and beige couches.  I hate it!  I actually find it depressing. I have been able to bring some color in with the artwork and fought tooth and nail for bold chairs.  I told DH that I really need color in my world.

Is "he" your husband or the seller?

I will say this: Paint before you move in.

We bought a newly renovated house that had been painted all neutral (Realtors seem convinced you have to do this to sell a house), but we put color in the bedrooms and the kitchen. The rest of the house is relatively open and flows. The kitchen wall we painted is the only wall that doesn't have cabinets and appliances on it.

We also mixed up the color somewhat. We looked up the feng shui of light and colors and looked at where the windows were and when light would be coming in. Our master bedroom actually has 3 different colors. Our LO's room has 3 also, plus a painted ceiling. LOVE painted ceilings! And our office is painted in a color that is suppose to inspire productivity.
  • After years of renting, when we finally bought our house, I used all of the colors. All of them.
  • We have different colors but everything flows. For example, the LR is Ben Moore "moonshine" a light chalky gray and the adjoining DR is "Silver Fox", a deeper moodier warm gray.

I do love all white walls as well if the decor and artwork is spot on.

  • I think as long as they're not all strong colors, colors.

  • Our bedrooms and bathrooms are all different from one another, some are painted, some have wallpaper,. Our kitchen and great room/foyer are open to each other so we have one color but added a one shade darker accent color on the wall with the fireplace.

As long as your colors aren't dark and bold, it's ok to have different colors in rooms that open up to each other as long as they complement each other.
