Trying to Get Pregnant

Jumping right in...Intro and Questions

Good evening!
I'm 29yo TTC.  I live in Colorado and am outdoorsy, and rather nervous and excited about the prospect of having children.

I've been surfing through some of the blogs as I have been having unusual symptoms since my IUD removal.  My husband and I are just beginning the steps towards creating a larger family and haven't yet stepped up the game into serious charting and trying, but...

My last period began on July 1st, and I had my Paraguard (copper non hormonal) IUD removed on 7/14.  My flow is rather clock work at 28 days with even the level of bleeding going in a predictable cycle, so according to this general idea I should have ovulated around July 15th.  My husband and I did not have sex other then the day before the IUD removal and then 4 days after 7/18..but I've spiked some strange symptoms over the past several days and would love some advice and perhaps to see if anyone else has had any symptoms post IUD removal?

7/18 through today my nipples have been exceedingly sore and sensitive (outrageously so), just my nipples mind, although for one day my breasts also seemed "heavier".  As of 7/19 I've been feeling like I have developed allergies, gunk in my throat and a post nasal drip that is starting to make my throat sore.  I've been getting headaches on and off and have been gasy, or windy as the more polite would say ;)

In the most positive of my hopes I like to pretend I could be pregnant, but truthfully I had sex with an IUD in (the copper although not hormonal disrupts the ability for sperm to reach the egg, not impossible to fertilize mind, but is supposed to make it much more difficult). Then had sex about 3-4 days post ovulation, so it seems to me that the chances of pregnancy aren't that realistic.  I'm looking forward to getting serious with my next cycle but would love if anyone has insight as to any of my aforementioned symptoms until then?

I'm very excited to get to know everyone, hear stories, commiserate and celebrate, and overall just enjoy learning about the next steps everyone is taking in their lives.  Thank you all a head of time for reading and and any advice you'd be willing to offer.

Cheers!

First off, your cycles can be wacky coming off any bc. I had mirena and my body has been completely different post mirena than pre-mirena.

I seriously doubt you ovulated with in a week of getting your iud removed, though admittedly i am not familiar with paragaurd and if you can even O on it.

That being said gas and sensitive nipples could just be pms. My boobs were tender starting the day I ovulated this cycle.

I would read taking charge of your fertility, start temping and get a fertility friend account. Opk's are helpful too. This way you know when you ovulate and when to time sex.

    Welcome and good luck!

    Thank you!

I did read about the charting and fertility friend in the beginners blog post as well and have just opened up an account but have yet to get a thermometer.  It appears to be an excellent resource thanks for the advice.

I think you are probably right that now my cycles and PMS will probably be different off of BC but I was truly hoping this would be minimum as the Paraguard has no hormones so I have been ovulating monthly with it.  Hopeful I guess :)

Although I do still hope this nipple pain won't become common place.

    Thank you again!

  • Everyone's cycle is "clockwork" until it isn't. You're ASSUMING (based on..?) that you ovulated on 7/15, so even if you had wound up pregnant, implantation would probably just be happening now so all your "symptoms" really mean nothing other than the fact you're hyper-aware & hopeful.

I highly suggest you look into temping, lurk around a bit & join in on the daily Two Week Wait thread to talk to others in the same situation as you.

JFC, if you read the Newbie Blog, you would NOT be asking about your symptoms and chances of pregnancy right now.

Take a test if you think you could be pregnant, and remember that symptoms don't mean shit and everyone overanalyzes in the first cycle TTC (and some every cycle).  We are not a board that likes to give false hope and analyze symptoms.

You can commiserate in the two week wait (TWW) threads, posted daily. Welcome and good luck!

  • Thank you everyone for the welcome!

As for the symptoms...I did state that I did not actually believe I am pregnant, that there is of course a hopeful part (easier to dream about that possibility then all of the reasons these symptoms are cropping up otherwise) but realistically-I get it.  I'm in the medical field and I know damn well the importance of science.  I'm not asking if I'm pregnant, you can't answer that and I can't answer that.  If I miss my period that likely hood may jump and I will take a test, but until that point I am not accustomed to what is happening in my body.

I also know well that sometimes it's best to get advice from others in your same or similar position (This is probably one of the larger resources of women who are watching their body after having an IUD removed pre TTC and peri TTC), to brainstorm and try to calm my nerves that my strange body responses may in fact not be that strange but a normal consequence of having copper in body for years.  If it turns out no one has had these similar post IUD symptoms (although some posts already seem to say they have-thank you guys :) ) and these symptoms take a nose dive or become more serious...I will not be asking after them on a chat board-rather I'll be with my doc or in the ER.

I am honestly just asking after these symptoms and advice after having an IUD removed.  It's my first time removing an IUD.  Also my first time with these symptoms.  I don't think I actually belong yet in the TWW but appreciate the idea and will look into that more.

I apologize about stating my regularity, I know I have yet to be tracking this as accurately as I should and will be doing.  You all are completely correct...I may have not ovulated at all this month and I definitely can not assume the date if I did.  I promise I've already purchased the thermometer and am reading as much as humanly possible via google searches, books and just lurking on this awesome site.

Overall thanks for the kicks and back pats, I apologize if I offended, and I am excited to learn and chat.

Sorry for my assumptions, you are 100% correct in your criticism and I apologize for my audacity and fresh-cut grass symptoms.  I am most definitely getting into temping, checking CM and trying to cut out assumptions and I appreciate your encouragement.  The mind is a very powerful thing and most definitely enjoys conjuring up symptoms to fit a wanted conclusion...

For your education though you might want to look at the hormonal changes that do actually begin occurring pre-implantation both via the embryo and mom:

    Cheers, and good luck!

  • Welcome and don't listen to all these people telling you not to post here! All are welcome and all questions and knowledge are useful! People should be more supportive and less judgmental!

I'm not sure where you got criticism from my response? But okay.

And I'm not saying that your body won't go through changes when sperm & egg meet. I'm saying that since true pregnancy symptoms are caused by HCG, which doesn't produce until implantation occurs (usually around 7-10DPO, in the study you listed the earliest HCG could be detected at all was 6DPO and that was one person) that symptoms felt before that are due to a rise in progesterone after ovulation. Since those symptoms & pregnancy symptoms are pretty similar it's easy for someone to get pregnant then look back & say "I had XYZ pregnancy symptom at 3DPO." No..they would've had that symptom regardless, they just classify it as pregnancy symptoms because they're now pregnant.
