NBR: food safety question

I just realized my H did not keep my tofurkey dogs frozen as per package instructions. They've been refrigerated for the last week instead. I can't really see why tht would make them bad, but I've never used this brand before. Thoughts? Are they still good?

I had really bad food poisoning a couple of years ago and would not take the risk...especially being pregnant.

  • I'm in the camp if in doubt, throw it out. If they package says to keep it frozen and it wasn't, I wouldn't risk eating it.

  • Eh, it's just seasoned tofu. It's not like its meat that's going to spoil. I don't know. I'm leaning toward eating it. It's been refrigerated the whole time.

If you weren't pregnant, I would say "smell and see", but I just would not even take the risk.
  • If they are meant to be kept frozen, they probably aren't okay. I really don't know, though. The only frozen dogs I can think of are Morningstar Farms and I've never kept them anywhere but the freezer.

If that's the brand, btw, they are in my opinion the best so definitely get them again!

I'd say throw it out purely b/c it's tofurky.  Haha, just kidding (sorry, couldn't help myself.  I'm sure it's fab.)

Seriously speaking though, I'd toss it if it wasn't stored the way the packaging suggests.  Like C&EChicago, I've had a really horrible experience with food poisoning and I never want to relive that again if I can avoid it...especially while preg.

I know, right. But I'm totally disgusted by hot dogs, too.

  • Ask on their fb. The FAQ on their site mentioned thawed products are good for 30 days in the fridge.

    smart! I'm an idiot.

  • I love tofurkey, I've never stored it frozen so that's news to me. Do you buy it frozen? I always find it in the refrigerated section.

Huh, yeah, I bought it frozen. I usually buy SmartOnes or MorningStar.

  • I would call the 800 number and ask if they are safe to eat.
