wind knocked out of 13 month old

My son was crying and threw himself backwards on the floor and knocked the wind of out himself. He couldn't catch his breath. It was scary but he is fine now. Has this happed to anyone else?

No, sounds scary...hopefully it was a one time thing.  My nephew (at about 14months) threw a tantrum at daycare and held his breath and passed out...dropped to the ground as stiff as a board.  After many tests at the emergency room they just determined he in fact held his breath until he passed out.  The bodies way of making you breath is to make you pass out so it relaxes and starts breathing again.  The doctor they worked with said his 2 nephews were prone to doing that frequently when not having their way.  Luckily 6 plus months later my nephew has yet to do it again.

For your son if he is crying (like a tantrum cry) you can try lying him on the ground and walking away...then he can't throw himself down.  I've done this with many children I work with to end tantrums.  They lose the wowing effect of throwing themselves to the floor and getting hurt and the tantrum are more boring after a while.

  • I hope it never happens again. It was horrible. I called the doctor to see what you do in that situation and she said to blow in their face it makes them want to breathe again.  Hopefully I will never have to do it!
