Listeria recall

I'm so freaked out!!

https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/breaking-news/index.ssf/2014/07/listeria_fears_prompt_recall_o.html

We get our produce at Wegmans and I've had a whole lot of peaches and nectarines in the past month in a half. Going to get a blood test today.

  • There was a previous post on this yesterday, I believe. I had a meltdown about the nectarines I just bought.

  • As long as you haven't eaten any you should be good.

  • Fucking peaches!  I've eaten my damn body weight in peaches while KU.  I got a call from Wegmans today notifying me (they must know based on the rewards card?).  I left work crying. I have a Dr. appointment Wednesday... so I figured wait until then to talk to my Dr.  I'm sorry you are going through this too.

  • I hope everyone is ok.
  • @Hazel622 - I called my OB and they told me to get a blood test at my GP's practice. If you don't want to wait until Wednesday, you can contact your GP and get tested sooner.
Although I am not sure whether it will be a one time test or we'll have to get tested several times, because I assume it takes time for the infection to show in the blood work?
Ever since I heard about the recall my back and neck hurt like crazy. I hope it's psychosomatic.

Hope we're all clear from this damn bacteria!

  • I just saw my doctor, and they told me that unless I have fever, chills, or GI symptoms they won't worry about it or test. They seemed to not be worried at all, and I get my care at the number 2 hospital in the country. I hope that makes you feel better, ladies! I'm still a little worried, but trying to just trust my doctor.

  • I just got off the phone with Trader Joes, looks like I'm in the clear, but good lord I didn't need that heart attack today. Sheesh.  Fruit!? Man... is nothing sacred???
  • Ugh crap...I've been eating tons of peaches from there...

  • SLC1102, I just called the store and told them what I'd purchased (clam shell of plums, clam shell of apricots), and they were able to let me know that neither of those products had been recalled.  It does sound like there's a difference if you buy the individual fruit, or in a shell, and it varies store to store.  I just explained that I'm pregnant and they were really helpful and nice. Good luck!!!
  • What exactly counts as a "GI symptom"? I've had GI symptoms my entire pregnancy. AKA sometimes I'm constipated and sometimes I'm having diarrhea. Sorry, TMI.
I know right?  After Wegmans called (automated message) to inform me that I bought a potentially bad batch, I began to have GI symptoms.  So, either listeria or more likely the nervous poops.

I just called my OB (even though I have an appointment Wednesday) and he wants me to have blood work in the morning, even without symptoms.

  • I have so many questions for the docs, but I'm not sure they'll be able to answer those. It seems that the fruits in question are from June 1, so what if the infection happened back in June and I wasn't even aware of it? I did have a bout of the runs sometime in June. Will that be detectible in the bloodwork? How long does it take until the infection shows up in the bloodwork? I mean, from the time the peach was eaten until it can be detected in the bloodwork?

  • Wawona Distribution has photos of the general packing up.

My local grocery store was not helpful either and couldn't name the distributor or manufacturer name that they use. They just told me the peaches are grown in California and Georgia.

Probably ok...but will bring it up to the doctor since it is a nationwide recall and the company said that they did not know the location of the companies who purchased the products from their (i.e.Wawona's) direct customers.

    Test
  • @CandEChicago‌ - the problem is that fruit sold individually may also be infected, so the packaging doesn't really help.
The only thing that's comforting about it, is that there haven't been any cases of illness reported yet.
I'm currently in the waiting room to see my GP. Will report back with his answers.

  • @Alwaysaforeigner If you used your shopper's club card Wegman's will call you to notify you that you bought some that was recalled. Apparently those calls went out today/yesterday according to our news. I was freaking out until this morning when I read that calls went out and I didn't get one.

  • @SLC1102OK, here's an update before I forget.
It ended up being the NP and not the doctor. She looked up some information on listeria in pregnancy and diagnosis on her system and talked to some doctors at the local hospital.
She said that there are two types of listeria. The non-invasive and the invasive. The non-invasive would usually produce GI symptoms within 24 hours of having the contaminated item. The invasive one (and that's the scary one) actually has a longer incubation period (median of 35 days) and has more severe symptoms, such as neck stiffness.
The diagnosis includes getting an anti-body bloodwork (if no symptoms are present). This should tell us if I've been exposed to the bacteria recently. If the test comes back positive or if I start getting any symptoms, then a blood culture is taken. If the anti-body bloodwork comes back as negative, she suggests repeating it in about a month.
This is all I can remember. Now the waiting game begins.

@jlbeanza - you can request the anti-body test from your doctor, it's a cheap and quick one.

@Alwaysaforeigner and everyone else...had my apt this morning and my doctor didn't say anything contradicting anything, but she did say it would be very doubtful that I have anything considering it's been 3 weeks since I've eaten the peaches that may have been contaminated. She also said that the CDC doesn't recommend even testing people if they don't show any signs/symptoms, however since I'm a neurotic FTM she went ahead and did the blood work anyway.  She said not to worry, especially since I had my A/S this morning and baby looks perfectly healthy.

  • Hello!
I want to do one of these precautionary blood tests (we ate them and I have been frantically panicked since our grocery store called us about the recall yesterday).
All my doctors have told me they don't do blood tests unless somebody has symptoms and that it wouldn't show up unless someone had symptoms (which I don't think I really buy?)
Please tell me what your doctor suggested about the antibody test and how long after possible exposure one could have the test and have it be accurate?
    Please let me know.
Thank you!! BEST OF LUCK TO ALL OF US! Hope nobody is sick!

I found out two (pregnant) women in a group I'm part of just got diagnosed with listerosis presumably from this incident (don't know which fruit or stores). They both had very bad symptoms appear. So scary.
That's so awful, T&Ps for them :( I hate this whole thing, and can't stop thinking about it!

@babystuff42 - She didn't say how long it takes to be detected, but suggested that I do another blood test in about a month. I think I will be also asking for the blood culture (which is different than the anti-bodies) because I read on the CDC website that the anti-bodies is not recommended because it's not reliable.
Also, don't believe your doctor about needing to have symptoms, because I read in this academic article (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2621056/) that listeriosis is sometimes asymptomatic.
@SLC1102 - I'm sorry to hear about the women in your group. I don't understand why the media continues to say that no illness has been reported, if it has.

On the company's website (someone else posted this and then I clicked on the site and read it myself) it does say that the levels of listeria found on the fruit that had it (and not all did have it) tested at 10.... This was sold to Australia (and Australia is the one who detected it), and THERE, anything under 100 is considered safe for the public and is sold.... But because the US has a zero tolerance policy (which I appreciate), they recalled it here as a precaution. But I was told (well, I read) that NO illnesses have been reported even in Australia ....
This honestly makes me feel a LOT better.
Here is the link so you can read it for yourself:

Also-- Regarding the blood test, I spoke with someone from a CDC hotline today and they said that the "blood serum" test was unreliable because somebody could test negative and still be positive... or people could be positive just because humans are exposed to it regularly, but it wouldn't be conclusive as to whether or not someone would be genuinely infected.
If you have the specifics of the kind of test your doctor is doing and their thoughts on all of this *PLEASE KEEP ME POSTED* because I want to be as safe as can be!

Hopefully though, with this Australia info, we can all relax a little!! :)

Thank you for the link, @babystuff42. It is comforting to know that the levels were really low.

Here's a snippet from the article I posted above, regarding diagnosis:
"Because listeriosis in pregnancy is serious and difficult to diagnose, blood cultures should be considered in any pregnant patient presenting with fever, especially if accompanied by flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms. After obtaining cultures, providers should consider starting treatment if suspicion for listerial infection is high"

From what I understand, blood serum is the anti-bodies test and blood-culture is the more reliable one (mentioned in the article).
