Re: group B strep - positive

  • I'm also positive, just found out today. As long as you get the antibiotics during labor you have nothing to be concerned with. I'm not sure about side effects to the meds but I'm sure it's not that bad.

  • Well, I was negative for GBS last time, but my water was broken for over 24 hours and I had to get IV antibiotics while I was in labor. It was some form of penicillin and I got 3 bags of it over the course of 16 hours or so. I didn't have any side effects, neither did baby, and everything turned out fine. I am sure you and baby will do just fine - something like 30% of women are GBS positive and have to get antibiotics. It is not rare!
  • I talked with my doc about it because I am allergic to penicillin. He did say there were other options if antibiotics if I were to come back positive. I wasn't last time, but they haven't given me my results yet for this time.

I'm positive and was with DS too. As long as you get antibiotics during labor, you should be fine. With DS, we were both fine.

  • My mom ended up being positive with all of us kids 30+ years ago and we were all fine (she did IV antibiotics). It's not worth worrying about at all.

  • I was positive with DD and my labor was fast enough that I didn't get the "full compliment" of antibiotics.  We were both fine, we just weren't allowed to go home early, had to stay at the hospital the full 72 hours so they could give her meds if she needed them (she didn't)

This is one of those things they've gotten really good at managing and monitoring, try not to worry too much about it!

  • @zoegirlTX I got tested on a Thursday and when I called the following Tuesday they were able to give me the results. I am also hoping to avoid an IV in L&D so I was relieved to find out it was negative.

  • I was with DD but haven't found out this time yet. It wasn't a big deal. I had antibiotics pushed through when I got to the hospital and DD and I were fine. No effects.

  • I've been positive 2 out of 2 times so far.  It's not a big deal, it's just important to know so that you can get to the hospital in time for 4 hours work of antibiotic before you deliver.  I was induced both times, so it wasn't an issue for me.  The meds do burn going in, but they can put a heat pack over the IV spot to help relieve the pain.  I never felt like the baby or I were at risk as long as I got the antibiotics before delivery.

So, don't stress!  Just double check your OB's suggestion for what point to head to the hospital.  I've been told to do the same 5:1:1 or once my water breaks to get treated in time.

do you find out instantly when they do the test or does it take a few days?

I'm hoping ot avoid a hep-lock while in L&D, so I really need to be negative....

I was negative last time, but I too am hoping to avoid having iv's. I've started taking garlic capsules (natural antibiotic) and probiotics daily. You could always try this as well! Can't hurt:)

I was positive last time and this time. Our hospital system has it set up that lab results are available online immediately if you are signed up for a health account so I knew right away. It isn't a big deal. I'm pretty sure I had all my antibiotics done before I even left the triage room to go to L&D. The antibiotics can burn, but I told my nurse and she mixed up the solution a little better and it was fine. Both DS and I were fine and had no side effects from it.

  • I was positive with dd and very disappointed because I had to have the hep-lock. I wanted to avoid it because it felt like it was the beginning of interventions I didn't want. But I needed it and it was no big deal. The person who put it in was terrible and couldn't get it, but even that wasn't a huge deal because I was in labor and didn't really care about my arm. Dd and I had to get antibiotics after delivery as well because I spiked a fever during labor. Also no big deal. I am allergic to penicillin too and they just gave me something else. The worst thing was we both had very smelly pee.

I was positive with DS and I am allergic to penicillin. I had to go to L&D as soon as possible after my water broke and was given a different antibiotic. NBD.

Haven't been tested with this pregnancy yet.

  • First pregnancy and I'm positive. Also currently hanging out in L&D 2 1/2 hrs into Pitcoin. The antibiotics BURN going in like PP's mentioned. My nurse did the same where she mixed it with fluids and it didn't burn nearly as much. Thank god because at 5 am I was ready to chop off my arm. We were also told we will be staying at least 48 hrs after delivery for monitoring to make sure everyone is ok.
  • I'm positive this time but was negative last time, so I have no input for how it affects labor.

  • I'm positive as well. Do they leave the IV in the entire labor and delivery, or can the IV be removed after the antibiotics are given?

My doc said antibiotics were just a precautionary measure, and the baby contracting the strep even if you didn't use antibiotics was "unusual." My friend was positive, didn't get the antibiotics (went into labor before she got her results), and the baby didn't contract it. Of course, I'd still use the antibiotics if I were positive.

Ok so I googled what a hep-lock is... it's just the catheter for the IV they put in, right? Why are you trying to avoid it? I think ours tries to put on in as soon as you get to L&D and they just cap it off until they're ready to use it. I hate IVs...
It's just a personal preference thing. I'd rather not have to have anything unnecessary stuck into me ;)  My midwives have said that it's NOT routine to have a hep-lock just b/c- you only get it if you have a need for it.
I'm on this boat too. Refusing IV or hep-lock unless I need it. Not even doing cervical checks until I feel the need to push. Are you delivering at a hospital?

For me, the IV was placed once I arrived at L&D.  I got fluid and antibiotics while in labor and then was disconnected once LO arrived.  The actual IV did not come out of my arm until I was being discharged.  They left it in just in case it was needed.  Which was honestly fine with me because I hate having it placed to begin with.

  • I was negative last pregnancy but found out yesterday I tested positive this time :( I've been reading up on some natural ways to get rid of it before delivery and started some. I'm hoping my doctor is open to re-testing me around 40 weeks and will discuss it with her at my next appointment. I'd like to try and get rid of it naturally if I can.

I was positive.  I guess the norm is to start antibiotics for RCS but there wasn't time since I went into labor first and they are supposed to run for several hours before delivery.  My water didn't break beforehand though.
