Trying to Get Pregnant

Temping issues

I am very new to this all. I just started to temp at the beginning of this cycle and already FF hates me. I am at CD20. Anyhow my temps are all over the place, which I did not really expect. I have been looking up about it and finding out a lot of factors affect temps. Many of which are probably my issues. I am a restless sleeper and toss and turn all night. I have read it is important to get a reading after at least three hours of good rest. I am sometimes a mouth breather, which I read can mess up temp readings as well. Since I starting to temp (at CD 8) I have probably only gotten two good readings in the last 12 days of temping, now that I am aware of these issues.

So question, do I just give up on temping? Or are the suggestions on what may help me to get better readings. I have my alarm set for about 1 hour before our typical wake up time. But have been finding I stir about an hour before that at times too. So did several temps then instead, which meant it was not at the same time everyday. So, do I move my alarm to earlier and go back to sleep? Would temping vaginally help? I currently temp orally.

I am new to all this, so any advice is welcome.

Always temp at the same time. Though i find that me, personally restless sleep doesnt affect my temps too much. It would be helpful if you could post the link to your chart.

    I would keep temping.

  • Like you said there are many factors at play. Isometomes even with crazy temps FF can pinpoint O, it is really good. If you have trouble and cannot pinpoint O I would suggest for sure switching next cycle to vaginal temping. It is less affected by factors than oral. Don't switch this cycle as vaginal temps are much higher than oral and will really screw up your chart. I would also suggest looking into OPKs as they may help you know when to possible expect O. I have steam alarm in the past for as early as 3:30 since I knew I would have good sleep between midnight and 3 and the. Went back to bed after. Good luck!

  • I had a crazy chart last cycle, so I switched to temping vaginally this cycle. It looks much better so far. Even with the rocky chart, though, FF still could pinpoint my ovulation date; I just hated those wacky temps...

    My Chart
  • I have strange sleep patterns also, but despite that I was able to see a clear shift after O. If it concerns you perhaps switch to temping vaginally? Otherwise I would say to stick with it. It won't be beautiful, but you will still get an overall picture of your cycle.
  • A link to your chart would be helpful.  What some people see as "all over the place" sometimes ends up being quite normal.

As for when you temp, that ends up being something that you'll have to figure out.  For some, it is more important to temp after 3 solid hours of sleep.  For others, it is the temping time.  I'm a very light sleeper and wake up often, but I found, after trying both, that temping at the same time was more important for me.  I had to experiment with both (not in the same cycle) to figure out what worked the best.

    Don't give up just yet!

  • I am also a very restless sleeper, after several months of temping (first orally, then vaginally) I found that I normally woke briefly around 4 am and had gotten at least 3 hours sleep by that time. I started temping at that time instead of at my alarm and it seemed to give me a less wonky chart. As a pp said, don't switch to vaginally temping mid cycle cause it well make things look crazy but switching to that type of temping may help out a lot too.

  • Thanks ladies. I will keep at it this month and change it up next to vaginally.

FF had originally given me a prediction for my O. Then I put in a temp and it said it could no longer detect/predict an O for me. I did use a few OPKs after talking with a friend of mine and FF doing that. I just got dollar store ones. The first one I did record a false positive, but changed it to a negative now. I did not know that a line was not a line, but the next two my line was the same or darker. I did another yesterday to see if the line went away or faded now and it was a squinter yesterday. So I will assume the positive did predict a surge for me. I will link a bit later to my chart. I can not figure it out while mobile. So I will do it when I am home later, if I can figure it out.

I see this a lot on new charters, it's because FF is still getting to know you and your cycles.  Keep plugging temps in consistently and I'm sure it will detect/predict an O.  The more data it has the better.

  • I figured that was the case, that it would work better as I had more cycles entered. :)

@momtosam‌ I have the same issues. My chart is all over the place. Grateful you posted and grateful for all of the info you ladies have to offer!
  • This is my first month temping also! I temp at 4:30am because I know I'm restless between 10p and midnight but after that bathroom break I sleep best until 4:30am. My temps have been wonky too, but FF seems to understand me as I also do ClearBlue ovulation kits with temping and they were consistent. Good Luck!!

  • Others have given good advice, I would try and keep up with the OPKs as well. Are you using them everyday or just not entering them into FF?
I am not doing them daily. If I do not get a BFP this month, then I will order a bunch of OPKs off amazon. I only used the 4 days indicated on my chart. I just did not know anything about them, so will add that as well next month.
