Stroller question

Went to target today to check out strollers. I was shooting for the graco click connect jogging stroller. That sucker is HEAVY. At least compared to the other one I found. It's Eddie Bauer endurance jogging stroller. I liked it much more than the graco, EXCEPT the lack of storage under the seat. There probably isn't even room for a diaper bag under there. The graco said 36 pounds and the Eddie Bauer says it weighs 21 pounds. It's also smaller once folded. (Better for my small car)

My question.....how important is that space underneath? Is it worth struggling with the bigger, heavier stroller just to have that nice big basket underneath? I did see a diaper backpack with "stroller straps" and I know they make those bigs hooks to hook over the stroller handle.
Any input is much appreciated. :)
Thanks ladies!

Re: Stroller question

  • I love our lightweight stroller except it has basically NO storage underneath. You have to be careful hanging things on the handles or using a hook because it can turn over when you take the LO out. A big basket is very high on my list while shopping for a double stroller.

  • Thank you ladies, I am such a bargain shopper that it takes me forever to make purchases like this. (Or in this case, select items for a registry). I want to get the most bang for my buck. I think I will probably end up going with the lighter weight one with less storage, but I am going to make DH check me both out too to get his input. Not quite sure yet what the primary use will be, but I used to jog and even when my knee pain keeps me from jogging, I love to go for walks. I want the air tires for all terrain. I can think of lots of off roading where the stroller would be useful.
I am not going to register for a $400 stroller though, my family will think I fell and hit my head. ;)

I did look at the Schwinn ones online, but after test driving some in the store today I am afraid to purchase a stroller without trying it first.

  • Have you visited Lucie's List? It's a fantastic site that compares baby gear. She lists the different pros/cons of strollers including the weight. You could find a few light weight strollers that you like on the website and compare basket sizes. She also lists prices which will keep you within your budget. www.lucieslist.com. :)

  • If you think you might want to jog with baby and don't mind a two handed fold, you might look at the Bob Revolutions. The older models can be found for under $400, or if you don't mind CL under $200-$300. The baskets seemed pretty big when I checked them out and I think they have been at the top of every best running stroller list I've looked at.

I'm torn between the new model Pro (28lbs) and Flex (26lbs), both with adjustable handle heights, one which has a hand activated rear drum brake (Pro), and the older SE (25lbs) which we can get a great deal on used. I just need to get DH to try the old fixed handles to make sure it works for both of us...
  • As much as a big basket underneath would be great....   Something on the lighter side and easy to get in and out of the trunk of the car is more important to me.  (I had heavier and lighter strollers with my first child... lighter definitely wins.)

  • I always hung my diaper bag. Made life easier . I can't imagine stuffing it underneath and then needing inside of it. The only time I needed underneath storage was if I was shopping at the mall. And even then, I shop very little so the only real time I needed it was while xmas shopping.

  • I have the graco fast action jogging stroller with the click connect and love it. I don't think it is too heavy. It folds sooo easy and is so easy to maneuver. We use it for walks, zoo, the fair, mall..... Everywhere. I do love the storage underneath
  • Lack of a big basket would totally not be a deal breaker for me. Our main stroller is a First Years umbrella stroller that was selected based on comfort for tall people to push it and not being bulky/folding easily. I hang the diaper bag on the handle and yes it will tip over like that when baby is removed, but I've never forgotten to take the bag off of the handle before removing baby.

DH thinks maybe I just thought it was heavy because I am currently carrying around a giant watermelon in my belly....lol. That's certainly a possibility, but the weight isn't even comparable to the lighter one. 36 vs. 21 pounds. Big difference. I will probably make him check them both out and take his input into consideration. I will have the final say though since I will be the primary user. :)

To the OP, thanks for posting this!  DH and I were looking at strollers this weekend.  I had pretty much already decided on the city mini before I took him to the store.  After test driving a bunch of options, I'm now undecided.  One of my big concerns is the small storage basket and having to carry the diaper bag.  Prepregnancy, I used to get tired having to carry a large handbag if I'm out for the whole day in the city, I can't imagine having to lug around the diaper bag while pushing the stroller.  It seems like the other popular urban option is the uppababy vista which has a huge easy to access basket, but paying $400 extra just for a bigger basket seems silly.  Looking forward to hearing more opinions.

  • we have the b-agile which weighs about 16 pounds, small storage but I never use it because I hang my diaper bag on the bar.

  • We just got the click connect system. I feel like both pieces are heavy but I love everything else and it's such an upgrade from the pos I had before!

Plus I got it for like $100 off so I was pretty proud I myself :)

@aa98 Take a look at the Britax B Agile travel system (comes with the base and Britax B safe car seat with adaptor for about the same price as just the City Mini GT). They are similar that one of the companies sued the other over it. We ended up with the B Agile. I think the guy at the store said that if you hang your bag on the handle of the City Mini GT it will tip over. I don't think that's the case with the B Agile but haven't checked. I believe the storage underneath is somewhat similar in size and the fold up is really easy too.

Thanks @jess123456!  I saw one of these on the subway yesterday and was impressed.  I am going to have to check it out the next time I'm at the store.  Do you know if it can be used with other car seats?  We have decided on the cybex aton 2 as it has enhanced side impact protection because our car won't accommodate a car seat in the middle (it's a 2001) so I wanted the extra protection.

36 pounds is too heavy for me! We went with the Baby Jogger City Versa. It's a bit heavier than the mini but the basket is much bigger and you can switch between rear and front facing.
  • @aa98 I honestly am not sure but I assume you could get different adapters for different car seats. You should give a call to BRU or another store and they should know. Obviously the travel system wouldn't make sense with that car seat model so maybe it isn't as much of a deal once you factor in the adaptor, base and car seat etc. Either way both City Mini GT and the B Agile are really great strollers (highly recommended by Lucies List too).
  • @aa98‌ just wanted to pop in and add that with the Britax stroller you can only use the Britax infant carrier. We bought the double version, the infant carrier is very safe and cushy so we loved it but if you are set on the Cybex it won't work for you.

  • When the kids were little I mostly had them in the Moby, but once they were about 6 months old they didn't like being restrained (and frankly, they were getting heavy) so we used the strollers much more then. At that point they're old enough for a small umbrella stroller, so we keep one in the trunk for random errands. For bigger outings (festivals, zoo, etc) a more comfortable stroller with a large basket is essential for us. By that age we need snacks, sippy cups, toys, etc for extended outings. Plus drinks, etc for the rest of us.

@jess123456 and @emoxymoose Thanks so much for the heads up!  I will check out the britax car seat as well.  I don't know why it wasn't on my original list, both of my SILs have the Chicco key fit and I was looking at that initially but when I commented our backseat was on the small side and the car seat it was a little heavy, and would get heavier once the LO is in it, the sales lady mentioned the cybex.  Back to BBB I go :)
