NWMR: apple tv or blue ray players

I'm debating getting DH an apple tv or a blue ray player for his birthday.  He's into gadets, TV, movies, sports, so it seems like a good idea.  He's wondering it there is a way to watch live tv, such as a football game, through the apple tv.  Which of these would you get?  What do you like about them ?

Re: NWMR: apple tv or blue ray players

  • I love our Apple TV, but I don't think there is a way to watch live TV through it. We use it to watch netflix, hulu and HBO, as well as rent movies and stream on ipads and laptops.  I haven't looked at a blu ray player in a few years, so I have no idea what kind of features they have now.  Apple TVs are great, especially if you already have apple products.

  • I think blue rays are on their way out.

Of the two you suggested I'd definitely go with the Apple TV.  However, I'd consider two other streaming devices: either Roku3 or Kindle FireTV.  I believe the two options I gave are $100.  I dn't know if Apple charges a premium for their brand.  I'd do some research.

  • oh wait, that reminds me... I think they might make "smart" blue-rays now. So the have streaming functionality.  This would be a good way to go if you have a large blue ray collection, and you want access to netflix, amazon, facebook and other channels (I'm sure they vary)
  • We do not have Apple TV.  We have blu-ray players, one of which can stream from various services.  We also have a smart TV which we can also stream movies.  I LOVE the smart TV.  Best investment ever...the kids love watching YouTube videos I upload plus other kids videos on the big TV.  We are keeping our blu-ray players just because...we have movies we can watch on them so why not.

  • If you are going with anything that streams Make sure to device streams any services you may already be paying for. For example amazon prime does not work on Apple TV or all blue ray players

  • We have both, and we use the blue ray to stream through Amazon Prime a lot more than we use the Apple TV.  The Apple TV was free when DH cashed in points for something (airline miles maybe?  Or credit card?  I don't remember). Do you have any points to cash in?
  • We have a blu ray player that streams, an apple tv, and a roku (my husband also loves gadgets).  Of the 3, we use the roku the most.  It does all of the streaming that the apple tv does, but also has amazon prime.
  • I would only get Apple TV over the others if you use apple devices and want to put up,photos and music and stuff. We also have Apple TV, rokua nd a tv that streams. I like the roku he best and actually have had it the longest (5 yrs though my brother owned it for a couple yrs before passing it on to me) and have had the fewest problems with it connecting and stuff like that.

I was also going to suggest Roku,  We had Apple TV, but phased it out for Roku, which we love.  We have an app on it called Nimble TV that allows live tv, but I don't know the cost of it.
