Trying to Get Pregnant

Fibroid found

Just venting a little bit, my doctor found a Fibroid (about 2cm) in my uterus. He told me not to worry about it and that it will not interfere in TTC or pregnancy. I can't help but worry a little.. Wish it just wasn't there. Have any of you ladies have had a similar experience? Is it really not a big deal? :(

Edit: spelling

Re: Fibroid found

  • I would question the it wasn't a big deal. I mean, that could interfere with implantation and I don't know what else. I suggest getting a second opinion.
Son: Jackson, 11/02/06, stillborn due to PPROM and IUGR. Over the next ten years we had 9 miscarriages from 8-14 weeks. On May 18, 2016 my daughter, Ridley, was born. We're OADNBC.

  • My RE said the same thing, he suggested trying an IUI first and if no success then take the fibroid out and try again but I didn't want to run the risk of the fibroid being the reason another possible pregnancy didn't happen. It can absolutely prevent implantation! My Assigned RN said to me "sometimes they don't cause problems with patients but if you were
My daughter I'd tell you to get it out of there". And so I scheduled my HSC the very for CD 6 (done between cd5-12) that very next cycle.

  • Oh wow thanks for sharing that with me. I made an appointment with my doctor this Thursday to discuss removal or other options. This is only my second cycle TTC but I rather prevent any further issues. This sucks :(
  • @menta84‌ yes it does but think of it as maybe a little hiccup and be thankful it's an easy fix :-)

  • There are multiple types of fibroids.  Depending on type and/or location it can have absolutely zero impact on your ability to implant and get pregnant.  I don't know that you need a second opinion.

Did the doctor give you any information other than size?   If the doctor isn't concerned, I'd assume you have a subserosal fibroid, which is what I have, multiple.  They're on the outside of the uterus, so they don't affect TTC or pregnancy.  If he's discussing removal with you, I would also wager a guess that it's near your cervix, because the only issue with subserosal fibroids and pregnancy is that if it's near the cervix and grows then it could mean you'd be unable to have a vaginal birth.  In fact, I still have all my fibroids because based on size, type, and location it'd be more trouble than it's worth to take them out.  So they just monitored the size during my pregnancy.

  • @jennycam‌ yes for sure! I'll definitely keep a positive mind
  • @BillyHorrible‌ I don't have much info other than the size, but thanks for your input. I will ask the doctor the location and what type of fibroid it is exactly. That will give me a better idea of what I need to do; maybe, as you said, it will not affect a future pregnancy at all. I really hope that is the case but we will see.
  • I have 8 fibroids, the largest being between 6 and 8 cm. I got pregnant just fine. Staying pregnant was the problem.

Having seen a specialist, I can give you some great advice, lol. Sometimes fibroids really aren't a big deal in pregnancy. Only when the fibroid(s) is in a place that would cause baby to lose space. Most of the time, fibroids are not a problem during pregnancy.

I will be having a myomectomy on August 12 to remove my fibroids because one in particular, the largest, is in the uterine cavity, therefore causing the most trouble because, if it grows in pregnancy, the baby would lose some space.

    Good luck!

  • I'm jesses girl. If you don't mind me asking ... Are you under or over 35?
  • I have two and had a successful pregnancy (just my experience). My Dr cautioned that they can grow. During pregnancy due to hormones and I had a couple extra ultrasounds to monitor their sizes. My Dr also cautioned they can sometimes cause pre-term labor. No harm in seeking a second opinion...good luck!

  • I just want to add my vote to the don't panic yet thinking. I have a 5cm uterine fibroid and I got pregnant and had a textbook pregnancy (ttc one cycle!) and now have a healthy baby boy. You could see the fibroid in all the ultrasounds! It's really not that big a deal, but if it will make you feel better to get a second opinion, do what you feel is right.

I have a 2.5 cm fibroid, my RE just saw it last week. She is not concerned and says there is no reason to remove it....it is actually inside my uterus. I had a healthy baby boy in 2011 and the fibroid was 4.5 cm in size when I was pg with him (they found it during an ultrasound, I have no idea if it was there when I got pregnant with him). I got pregnant this past march but it ended in a chemical. If your doc isn't concerned it would cause issues with fertility, I would trust their opinion. EDIT: you asked jesses girl her age so I thought I would add that I will be 35 next month. I'm going to an re for that reason because some testing by my ob has indicated my progesterone is too low and I have a possible luteal phase defect.

I'm 29 and had 4 fibroids removed in May. The reason my OB/GYN recommended they be removed is due to their location. They were on top of my uterus, and if they had grown during pregnancy might have caused preterm labor.

I took the rather safe than sorry approach.

That being said, my GP (who founf the fibroids on u/s) said the she has had patients with more an bigger fibroids than mine have no problems during pregnancy/birth, so it needn't be a problem.

  • A friend of mine had a fibroid and was told it was no big deal. She got pregnant, her fibroid started to grow, and the baby was delivered by emergency c-section at 31 weeks.

I would get a second opinion and ask, specifically, what the danger would be if the fibroid began to grow while pregnant. It may be in an area where it wouldn't matter much, or maybe not. Either way, it can be dealt with as ladies above have shown!
