Kids Sharing a Room

Apologies for the actual parenting question, but I've noticed a few of you have your kids sharing a room, and well you guys always have opinions. My DH just deployed, and the kids and I moved in with my MIL. They love being here, except this is the first time that they are sharing a room. DD is 3.5 and DS is 2. I got them new beds and favorite bedding, they have already been on the same sleep schedule, and once they are asleep it is fine. I'm just struggling with the bedtime routine. My DD, especially, seems to be mourning the loss of our normal solo bedtime routine and it is a bit of a circus with both wanting attention and has not been ending well - basically me having to leave two upset kids or no one was ever going to sleep.

They each have short little routines that we have always done alone in their own rooms. I tried doing DS' routine first and then doing DD's, but if I am still in the room he just gets up and wanders around causing havoc and asking for more rocking (if I leave he stays in bed). If I try and do DD first she gets a bit indignant about going to bed first and then gets jealous when I rock DS. I've also tried having grandma help, but that was a lot of people in a small room and they still fought over my attention when I was leaving. I'm really hoping that someone has a simple idea that I am overlooking, or something that I can do to help with this transition and start a new routine.

TL:DR How do you handle the logistics of bedtime routine with two kids in the same room?

Re: Kids Sharing a Room

  • It would be easier to do them separately, but I would have to work on changing one of their schedules.

  • I second making a new routine - try to incorporate parts of their current routines - maybe rock DS while reading DD a book she picks out (if that is part of her routine).  It will take them time but they will both get used to it.

  • DS used to share a room with SS (6 years apart), now DS and DD are temporarily sharing a room. We stagger bed time. I read books to both kids together, then DD (3) gets in bed and gets settled while DS takes his shower. I let DS stay up about 30 minutes after DD usually. Then DS goes to bed. DD is usually asleep by the time DS goes to bed,but if she is not, then she is relaxed enough to not get all worked up. The usually wake each other in the morning, but our rule is that they have to play quietly in their beds until 7am (we have one of those ok to wake clocks)
