Anyone know the difference between these meds? Our first pedi had S on Protonix, but the new pedi changed him to prilosec. Both have mentioned the cost of prevacid as why they are not prescribing it. I have told them that no we don't have a ton of money but if that is what my son needs then PLEASE prescribe it, we will find a way to make it work.
Just wondering are these meds different in a big way, would it maybe help my son more if someone would just prescribe the prevacid and let us worry about the cost?
Re: Difference between prilosec and prevacid?
Leo has been on Prevacid since he was a couple of months old. We tried Axid for a couple of months and it was disasterous, so we put him back on Prevacid. It works pretty well, but he does still have flareups.
He takes the solutabs. For the first little while we dissolved the little pills in some water, then squirted them into his mouth with a syringe. They taste like strawberries, so he's always gobbled it right down. Now that he eats a lot of solids we just give him the soltab and he chews it up and swallows it (they dissolve very quickly).
Our copay for it hasn't been terrible, and we've been on 2 different insurance plans. I think the most we've ever paid for it is $25/month.
You can get a card from the manufacturer at beyondtheburn.com that acts as secondary insurance, and discounts your copay by up to $25. So we've been getting it absolutely free!
They are all PPIs - Prilosec was the first PPI on the market, and pretty much the weakest one... which is why there is still a huge Rx market even though Prilosec is OTC... b/c it just doesn't work quite as well for many people.
As far as the other Rx PPIs, Prevacid is generally used for peds b/c it has a solutab administration which is easier to admin + tastes great. Some people do better on one PPI vs. another - for no particular reason - they all work the same way for the most part.
Cost will depend on your insurance- you can ask your pharmacist what a month Rx of Prevacid would cost you with your plan - for some it's cheaper than buying OTC prilosec... it all depends on your formulary.
and as the other person said- there is the $25 instant rebate card as well to help with the copay.
