Trying to Get Pregnant

pre - pregnancy check up

1. Did you have one?
2. If so, what did they do?
3. What kind of things did you ask?

Re: pre - pregnancy check up

  • I did have one. She took me into her office prior to the examination (yearly exam) and we talked about basics. The only thing I really asked was about a liver condition I have.

    It was pretty quick.

  • I just went to my normal annual appointment and mentioned that my husband and I were TTC

She didn't do any thing other than the normal stuff (pap, breast exam)

I asked her about my anxiety medication and she advised I went off of it as it is not safe once pregnant.

Other than that, she said take pre-natals and if we're not KU after 6 months of trying to come back.

  • Yup. I just brought it up at my annual and I also was scheduled for a pap. I told them I was already on pre-natals and asked them to review my vaccines as I wanted an MMR and Tdap as recommended when TTC so I got those. It's a waste to make a special appointment unless you actually need a vaccine or pap.

  • Hi...so I had a very low key unofficial pre-pregnancy check up with my PCP, I scheduled a physical and told her I was doing that because we wanted to start "family planning". Being that I'm only 25 I feel like they didn't do all that much. Talked about charting/ovulation. Encouraged taking PNV (which I already was). I asked about blood work and my doc explained other than checking to see my immunity to varicella and rubella, nothing else was indicated at this time. She reminded me it could take a healthy couple up to a year and to come back if I have a ppt or a year has gone by. It wasn't what I expected...it made me feel better at the time because I was anxious to start TTC. But now 6 months down the road looking back, it really wasn't helpful. Not sure what else could have been done but just wanted to share my experience with it.

  • I made a special appointment but only because I have psoriasis and the topical medication I use is a steroid so I wanted to ask about that. She ended up switching my meds, telling me what my POSSIBLE fertile window would be, and then told me to get prenatals. Unless you have an existing condition or want to double check your meds I don't think the appointment is completely necessary.

  • During my annual with my ob/gyn I told her we decided to start TTC and asked if the wacky PMS symptoms we had been monitoring would cause an issue. She told me to give it 10 months before we dig any further.
I also hadn't seen a GP in 15 years. Yep, 15. So I established care with one and had her run a general blood panel. Mostly because I was already in my 30s, had recently dramatically changed my diet, and had been generally neglecting my health for so many years. Also told her that we were TTC and she wished me luck since my blood specs came back great.

I had one--but only because of other issues going on at the time.  My doctor talked to us about charting and ovulation.  If you have health issues, I would say it is worth it.  Honestly, though, once I lurked here, I learned 3x more than anything I got from my pre-pregnancy visit.

  • I mentioned at my last annual that i would start TTC before my next annual.  She just took some blood to check on my immunizations and make sure i didn't need to get any of those updated.  My immune system is pretty awesome, and none of them had worn off (impressive feat because all of them were at a minimum 14 years old, and in the case of chicken pox i am apparently immune despite never having had the illness or the vaccine).

she basically said she'd see me at my next annual or whenever i get a +HPT, whichever comes first.  And i left.  No big deal.

  • I just had my regular annual exam and told her we had been trying for the last 8 months. I asked about vaccines and I also asked what the next steps were if we hit the one year mark so I could start planning. I am lucky in that a fertility clinic is a part of my regular clinic so testing can be ordered by my doctor and the looked at by an RE.

  • He basically did nothing. I did get to hear about his kids wedding and how his wife is a controlling mother and that his wife wouldn't relinquish control over the RSVP cards, but he justified it by saying that he and his wife are paying for everything. LOL I feel sorry for his future daughter in law!

I think he was anxious about his wife because he wouldn't stop talking about it. LOL He needs to get her shit under control! RSVP cards aren't worth ruining the relationship with your son and future daughter in law! That's just my humble opinion!
